Presidential Search

The presidential search process for the 26th president of Culver-Stockton College is underway.

April 10, 2014 - On behalf of the Presidential Search Committee, I am pleased to report that the search is progressing well and on schedule. The search committee met recently on campus and faced some difficult choices as it reviewed the candidacies of a well-qualified, diverse and national pool of leaders.

The committee selected a small number of semi-finalists for confidential preliminary interviews to be held off campus. At the conclusion of those interviews, a sub-set of those candidates will be identified as finalists to participate in extensive interviews on campus, with a broad range of constituents. Our current timetable expects that we will welcome finalists to campus in late April and early May. Your participation in those visits will be vital to the success of the search.

I am very pleased with the progress of the committee’s work to date and encouraged about the ultimate outcome of the search process. Thank you for your interest and support.

April 1, 2014 - I am pleased to report that the search for the College’s next president is progressing well and on schedule. The Presidential Search Committee recently met and began the multi-stage vetting process to identify candidates whose backgrounds and experiences seem especially consistent with the qualities and qualifications established for the search. The committee faced difficult choices as it reviewed the applications of a broad and deep pool of accomplished leaders and chose to advance a select group for initial reference checks.

The committee will meet again soon to conduct another level of evaluation and to select a small number of semi-finalists for confidential preliminary interviews to be held prior to the end of April.

We are pleased with the progress of the committee’s work to date and encouraged about the ultimate outcome of the search.

On behalf of the search committee, I will continue to stay in touch with you throughout the process. Please feel free to contact me at with any questions.

Thank you for your support.

March 12, 2014 - The committee members met recently to discuss the progress and to initiate the systematic review of applications. This initial review, the first of several stages in the candidate vetting process, will continue until shortly after the March 19 deadline for applications.

The multi-faceted process of building a robust and diverse pool of well-qualified candidates continues in earnest. We ask once more for your help in identifying promising prospects or people who might be able to suggest such prospects. Please reach out to our consultant, Ms. Julie Tea (, with names and contact information related to any potential candidates. The nominations and suggestions that we receive from those closest to the Culver-Stockton family may be among the most meaningful in the process of candidate generation.

The committee members will meet again in late March to begin reducing the pool of applicants to a smaller group for further review and evaluation.

The search prospectus continues to be available for your review here. Thank you for your support.

- Ron Leftwich, Chair of the Board of Trustees of Culver-Stockton College and the Search Committee

Feb. 18, 2014 - On behalf of the Presidential Search Committee, I write with an update regarding our shared efforts to find the next great leader for Culver-Stockton and a worthy successor to President Valentine.  I would like to thank all of you who participated in the pre-search study our consultant Julie Tea of AGB Search led on the campus in late January. Your thoughtful comments provided the basis for the creation of the search prospectus, a valuable tool that will be used to solicit nominations and recruit candidates nationally.  The search committee members recently reviewed the search prospectus draft, and our edits were incorporated by our search consultant and the team in the College’s Communications Office. We invite you to review the finalized copy which is available here and at AGB Search’s site.

As you review the search prospectus, please pay particular attention to the attributes most highly desired in Culver-Stockton’s next president.  We urge you to suggest people you know who could serve effectively in this critically important position, or those you think might know of potential candidates.  Please forward their names to me ( ) or to Julie Tea (, along with any advice you have on the best way to approach the individuals.  Our committee is well aware that the success of our search depends on the involvement of all members of the College community. Please rest assured that names and information will be treated with full confidentiality.

Over the next several weeks, we will generate a national candidate pool through nominations received from you and others, inquiries at other colleges and universities similar to Culver-Stockton in scope and mission, advertising in The Chronicle of Higher Education and Inside Higher Ed and on a number of other relevant Websites, and the work of our search firm, AGB Search. In March the search committee will begin to narrow the candidate pool, moving toward May when final interviews involving the entire College community will be held.

The search is off to a good start. I will share with you again as we enter subsequent stages of the process, and those updates will be posted to the Presidential Search Website as well.  Please feel free to contact me or our search consultant, Julie Tea, with any questions.
