Computer Information Systems Major

The Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems (CIS) is designed to prepare students for productive, professional contributions in a broad spectrum of computer information and computer-oriented business positions. It offers a practical curriculum that provides a background for immediate employment in applications programming, information systems, computer operations, databases, computer networking and activities on the World Wide Web. The requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree in CIS include 31 hours of Computer Information Systems and Management Information Systems courses and 24 hours of business courses, as outlined below.

Required CIS Core Courses - 25 Hours

  • CIS 103 - Electronic Spreadsheets (1 hr)
  • CIS 201 - Computer Programming (3 hrs)
  • MIS 210 - Business Programming (3 hrs)
  • CIS 211 - Applied Programming (3 hrs)
  • CIS 230 - Web Design (3 hrs)
  • CIS 330 - Computer Systems (3 hrs)
  • CIS 420 - Computer Networks (3 hrs)
  • MIS 450 - Systems Analysis and Design (3 hrs)
  • CIS 490 - Senior Project (3 hrs)

CIS majors are strongly encouraged to pursue a professional internship and, after taking the Computer Sytems and Computer Networks classes, to seek A+ and Network+ certification from CompTIA.

Six more hours from the following

  • CIS 253 - Graphic Design (3 hrs)
  • MIS 320 - Intelligent Systems (3 hrs)
  • MIS 410 - Database Systems (3 hrs)
  • MIS 430 - Decision Support Sys (3 hrs)

  • ECO 201 - Macro Economics (3 hrs)
  • ECO 202 - Micro Economics (3 hrs)
  • ECO 205 - Elementary Statistics (3 hrs)
  • ACT 125 - Principles of Accounting I (3 hrs)
  • ACT 126 - Principles of Accounting II (3 hrs)
  • BUS 210 - Principles of Organizational Structures and Management (3 hrs)
  • BUS 302 - Management (3 hrs)
  • BUS 311 - Finance (3 hrs)
  • CIS majors are encouraged (but not required) to pursue some or all of the following elective courses.

Suggestive Electives

  • CIS 106 - Introduction to Presentation Computer Graphics (1 hr)
  • PHI 206 - Logic (3 hrs)
  • Mathematics courses at the Calculus level or above

CIS majors who are interested in applications programming may elect to minor in Mathematics. Those who are interested in Web development may elect to minor in Art.
