Middle School Education

 

To become certified to teach middle school, students must: choose an area of concentration, complete certification in either an elementary or a secondary major, and complete a professional portfolio which documents knowledge, skills and abilities gained during undergraduate studies.

Elementary Education Majors
Elementary majors must complete the elementary coursework, plus the following courses or requirements:

  • Edu 350: Middle School Curriculum/Lab
  • Edu 355: Middle School Philosophy
  • Coursework in an area of concentration must also be completed (21 hours).
  • Student teaching will be in an elementary classroom for six weeks and a middle school classroom for six weeks.

Language Arts Concentration
21 Hours Required:

  • Eng 107 does NOT meet this requirement.
  • Edu 307: Teaching of Reading
  • Edu 309: Methods of Teaching Language Arts and Literature in Elementary Schools
  • Edu 335: Teaching Reading in the Content Areas
  • Edu 419: Teaching Remedial Reading
  • Eng 110: Writing and Literature
  • Com 115: Fundamentals of Speech
  • Eng 325: Modern English Grammar
  • Eng 420: Teaching of Writing
  • Electives chosen from Eng 201, 311 or 312

Mathematics Concentration
21 Hours Required:

  • Mat 203: Math for Elementary/Middle School Teachers I
  • Mat 204: Math for Elementary/Middle School Teachers II
  • Edu 310: Methods of Teaching Mathematics
  • Mat 115: Precalculus
  • Mat 120: Analytic Geometry and Calculus I
  • Mat 205: Elementary Statistics
  • Edu 404: Tests and Measurements

Science Concentration
21 Hours Required:

  • 3 Hours of Biology
  • 3 Hours of Natural Science
  • Edu 312: Methods of Teaching Science in Elementary Schools
  • Bio 205: General Botany
  • Mat 115 or 120: Calculus
  • Nas 200 or 204: Natural Science
  • Che 112 or 125: Chemistry

Social Studies
Students must complete a 30-hour concentration in Social Studies, unless they are completing two concentrations, of which they would need two areas with 21 hours each.
30 Hours Required:

  • 3 Hours of Economics
  • 3 Hours of U.S. History
  • 3 Hours of Geography
  • 6 Hours of Psychology
  • Edu 311: Methods of Teaching Social Studies
  • 3 Hours of Political Science
  • 3 Hours of Sociology
  • 7 Hours of Electives NOTE: No discipline can exceed 6 hours.

Secondary Education Majors
Secondary education majors must complete the secondary coursework, plus the following coursework:

  • Edu 350: Middle School Curriculum/Lab
  • Edu 355: Middle School Philosophy
  • Edu 307: Teaching of Reading or Edu 419: Teaching Remedial Reading
  • Mat 203: Math for Elementary/Middle School Teachers I or Mat 204: Math for Elementary/Middle School Teachers II
  • Two science courses with labs
  • Student teaching in grade nine or completing a practicum in an appropriate area is required.

Language Arts Concentration

  • Eng 110: Writing & Literature
  • Com 115: Fundamentals of Speech
  • 21 Hours of Language Arts, Communication or English
  • Edu 309: Methods of Teaching Language Arts and Literature in Elementary Schools OR Eng 402: Methods in Secondary Subjects--English
  • Edu 307/419: Teaching of Reading
  • Edu 350: Middle School Curriculum/Lab
  • Edu 355: Middle School Philosophy
  • Mat 203 or 204: Math for Elementary/Middle School Teacher
  • Two Lab Sciences (One Biological and One Physical or Earth Science

  • Edu 310: Methods of Teaching Mathematics OR Eng 402: Methods of Secondary Subjects--Math
  • Edu 307/419: Teaching of Reading

  • Two Lab Sciences (One Biological and One Physical or Earth Science

Science Concentration

  • 21 Hours of Science Courses (Biology, Chemistry, Natural Science)
  • Edu 312: Methods of Teaching Science in Elementary Schools OR Eng 402: Methods of Secondary Subjects--Science
  • Edu 307/419: Teaching of Reading
  • Edu 350: Middle School Curriculum/Lab
  • Edu 355: Middle School Philosophy
  • Mat 203 or 204: Math for Elementary/Middle School Teacher

Social Studies Concentration

  • 3 Hours of U.S. History
  • 3 Hours of American Government
  • 6 Hours of Psychology
  • 9 Additional Hours of Sociology, Geography, History and Political Science Courses (No discipline should exceed 6 hours.)
  • Edu 311: Methods of Teaching Social Studies OR Edu 402: Methods in Secondary Subjects--Social Studies
  • Edu 307/419: Teaching Reading
