Music
The music department has a long tradition of excellence at Culver-Stockton College. For over 100 years, the college has offered programs in music that have produced fine musicians and music teachers. Today, the music department continues to serve the college through liberal arts study, professional preparation, and community involvement in music. The music department is an Associate Member of the National Association of Schools of Music. We offer:
- An oustanding faculty of performers and teachers who are committed to the individual development of each student. All of our full-time faculty members have received outstanding teaching awards. In addition, some of the finest musicians in our region serve on our staff of adjunct performance faculty.
- A rigorous program of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music and the Bachelor of Music Education Degree. A minor in music is also available.
Outstanding vocal and instrumental ensembles offering a wide variety of performance opportunities. These include the Collegiate Choir, Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble. These ensembles are open to qualified student musicians regardless of their major.
- A music scholarship program for both music majors and non-major musicians. The scholarships are based on performance ability as demonstrated by audition.
- State-of-the-art facilities in the Robert W. Brown Performing Arts Center and adjoining Alexander Campbell Auditorium. These facilities include a 900-seat auditorium, 200-seat recital hall, practice and rehearsal rooms, music computer lab, piano lab, faculty studios, and classrooms.
Instrumental Ensembles
Instrumental Ensembles at Culver-Stockton provide many opportunities for musical performance and development. In addition to providing valuable professional training for instrumental music majors, the college's music ensembles give the non-major a chance to perform in any of the following ensembles:
- Symphonic Band
The Symphonic Band is a large ensemble open to all experienced instrumentalists. Dedicated to high quality performance of fine band music, the Symphonic Band performs a wide variety of music, including standard band works, orchestral transcripts, and modern original band pieces.
- Wind Ensemble
The finest players in the Symphonic Band are chosen by audition to form the Wind Ensemble. This group performs band and wind ensemble music of the highest quality. In addition to performance on campus, the Wind Ensemble also travels to area high schools and community events. Each year this group performs on tour with the Jazz Ensemble.
- Jazz Ensemble
The Jazz Ensemble performs a variety of jazz and contemporary styles in a standard big band instrumentation. Musicians are chosen by audition and must also be members of the Symphonic Band. The Jazz Ensemble performs frequently in a wide variety of settings, including the Annual Tour. Each spring the Jazz Ensemble hosts C-SC JazzFest.
- Pep Band
The Pep Band is a volunteer group of musicians from the Symphonic Band that performs at a limited number of football and basketball games.

Vocal Ensembles
The Vocal Ensembles at Culver-Stockton provide many opportunities for musical performance and development. In addition to providing valuable professional training for vocal music majors, the college's vocal ensembles give the non-major a chance to perform and develop their voice in any of the following ensembles:
- Collegiate Choir
This ensemble is open to all singers without audition and performs at various college convocations and concerts. The Collegiate Choir has performed frequently with the Quincy Symphony Orchestra, including such works as Haydn's "Creation," Randall Thompson's "Testament of Freedom," and Handel's "Messiah".
- Concert Choir
Auditions are held each fall for this 55-member select ensemble. The choir tours extensively in the Midwest each spring and has received numerous invitations to perform for the Missouri Music Educators Association at its annual convention. Choir members participated in International Tours in 1989 and 1992.
- Chamber Choir
This group is a select ensemble of 20-25 members. The repertoire consists of a wide range of choral literature including vocal jazz and madrigals. Student conductors are given an opportunity to direct rehearsals and performances.
- Opera Workshop
The Opera Workshop provides the serious vocal students with the opportunity to perform chamber operas, learn stage production techniques, and develop acting skills.
Keyboard Music
There are many opportunities for pianists to perform and study at Culver-Stockton College. Lessons by outstanding teacher/performers are available for both music majors and non-majors. Class piano is offered for all students interested in learning the piano for the first time and for music majors, who are not accomplished pianists, to develop their piano skills.
Performance opportunities for pianists include student recitals, choral accompaniment, solo and ensemble accompaniment, and performing with the C-SC Jazz Ensemble.
Culver-Stockton College has many fine pianos available for practice and performance, including Kawai and Baldwin Concert Grand Pianos. Other instruments include a Wicks Pipe Organ and Tkach Harpsichord.
