Athletic Training
Clinical Education/Progression Each student will complete a minimum of 750 hours of clinical field experience. This experience will take place in the athletic training room; varsity athletic game and practice venues at Culver-Stockton College; as well as various physical therapy, physician, and other allied health care facilities in Canton, MO, Quincy, IL and Hannibal, MO. Students will be required to purchase professional liability insurance prior to beginning their clinical experience.
Pre-Program Admission/Transfers
(Freshman Year or 1st two semesters for transfers)
Students who have not been accepted to the program or who are transferring to Culver-Stockton College and have not met any of the admissions requirements are required to have a minimum of 100 observation hours over their first two semesters. This is a program admittance requirement. In addition, students must also successfully complete the following courses with a grade of "C" or better: Atr 104 - First Aid/CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Atr 150 - Introduction to Athletic Training during the first semester; and Atr 175 - Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries and Bio 210 - Anatomy & Physiology I during the second semester.
A certified athletic trainer or other approved allied health care provider must verify all hours. Students will not receive clinical evaluations while completing these hours. These hours may be counted towards the 750 hours of clinical field experience required to complete the program.
1st Year Admittance
(Sophomore Year or 1st year after admittance for transfers)
High School/Clinic Experience
Students in their first year of admittance in the Athletic Training Education Program will complete high school and clinic experiences. Students will be concurrently enrolled in ATR 201 (High School Experience) and ATR 202 (Clinic Experience). The student will complete a minimum of 25 clock hours for each and be assigned to a particular clinical instructor within a local high school or clinical setting. In addition, students will meet with their respective faculty member in a classroom setting on a weekly basis. A certified athletic trainer or other approved allied health care provider must verify all hours. The student will receive one clinical evaluation from the ACI or clinical instructor at the end of each of these rotations. Students must attain a grade of "C" or better to successfully complete this experience. Failure to do so will result in the student having to repeat the high school/clinic experience.
2nd & 3rd Year Admittance
(Junior & Senior Years or 2nd/3rd years after admittance for transfers)
Students will complete four specified rotations during the last two years in the Athletic Training Education Program: Equipment Intense Experience, Lower Extremity Experience, Upper Extremity Experience, and General Medical Experience.
Equipment Intense Experience
(Football)
*Students must have completed Atr 175- Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries with a grade of "C" or higher to begin this rotation. Students will be concurrently enrolled in ATR 301 (Equipment Intense Experience). The student will complete a minimum of 125 clock hours and be assigned to a particular approved clinical instructor within the confines of C-SC football. In addition, students will meet with a faculty member in a classroom setting on a weekly basis. A certified athletic trainer or other approved allied health care provider must verify all hours. The ACI will evaluate the student at the midpoint and conclusion of this experience. Students must attain a grade of "C" or better to successfully complete this experience. Failure to do so will result in the student having to repeat the Equipment Intense Experience.
Lower Extremity
(M/W Soccer, Volleyball, M/W Basketball, Football, Cross Country, Track & Field)
*Students must have completed Atr 250 - Athletic Injuries I with a grade of "C" or higher to begin this rotation. Students will be concurrently enrolled in ATR 302 (Lower Extremity Experience). The student will complete a minimum of 125 clock hours and be assigned to a particular approved clinical instructor within the confines of a lower extremity sport at C-SC. In addition, students will meet with a faculty member in a classroom setting on a weekly basis. A certified athletic trainer or other approved allied health care provider must verify all hours. The ACI will evaluate the student at the midpoint and conclusion of this experience. Students must attain a grade of "C" or better to successfully complete this experience. Failure to do so will result in the student having to repeat the Lower Extremity Experience.
Upper Extremity
(Volleyball, Baseball, Softball, Football, Field Events)
* Students must have completed Atr 275 - Athletic Injuries II with a grade of "C" or higher to begin this rotation. Students will be concurrently enrolled in ATR 401 (Upper Extremity Experience). The student will complete a minimum of 125 clock hours and be assigned to a particular approved clinical instructor within the confines of an upper extremity sport at C-SC. In addition, students will meet with a faculty member in a classroom setting on a weekly basis. A certified athletic trainer or other approved allied health care provider must verify all hours. The ACI will evaluate the student at the midpoint and conclusion of this experience. Students must attain a grade of "C" or better to successfully complete this experience. Failure to do so will result in the student having to repeat the Lower Extremity Experience.
General Medical
(Off-campus - Quincy Family Practice Center-Various clinical supervisors)
*Students must have completed Atr 350 - Medical Aspects of Athletic Training with a grade of "C" or higher to begin this rotation. Students will be concurrently enrolled in ATR 402 (General Medical Experience). The student will complete a minimum of 25 clock hours and be assigned to a particular clinical instructor within the confines of the Quincy Family Practice Center. In addition, students will meet with a faculty member in a classroom setting on a weekly basis. A certified athletic trainer or other approved allied health care provider must verify all hours. The student will receive one clinical evaluation from the clinical instructor at the end of this experience. Students must attain a grade of "C" or better to successfully complete this experience. Failure to do so will result in the student having to repeat General Medical Experience.
*Atr 476 - Professional Internship in Athletic Training is purely a field experience opportunity. It is similar to the internship program for all other majors on campus and follows the same institutional guidelines. It is designed to expose students to a setting(s) that they express interest in as a possible employment setting. It will be determined that the student is placed with an appropriate clinical supervisor however; there are no competencies or proficiencies formally instructed or evaluated during this course. To be eligible for the professional internship, the student must have reached the second semester of their junior year and have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 (which is also a necessary minimum to remain in good standing in the program).
Clinical Rotation Travel Requirements/Policies
Several off-campus clinical rotations with various health care specialties will be required in order to successfully complete this program. Students should be aware that due to the lack of adequate health care practitioners in the Canton community, travel to other communities will be necessary. The majority of this travel will be to the Quincy, IL and Hannibal, MO areas. These destinations are about 20 and 40 miles respectively, from campus. Students are expected to provide their own means of transportation and will not be reimbursed for any travel expenses.
Termination of a Student's Participation
Any student may be removed from the clinical experience and/or program as deemed appropriate. Reasons for removing a student may include but are not limited to the following:
- unprofessional or unethical behavior on the part of the student;
- failure on the part of the student to meet any necessary academic requirements;
- possession or use of alcohol, illegal or controlled substances, or other toxic or foreign agents which my tend, in the reasonable judgment of the college, program, and/or affiliate, to limit or adversely affect the student's performance of any activities associated with the student's clinical experience;
- arrest of conviction for any felony, or for any misdemeanor involving alcohol or drug use, moral turpitude, theft, or other such infarctions of the law;
- personal good cause, including but not limited to medical emergencies.
Summary of Clinical Education/Experience (Professional Phase Only)
Series of 6 experiences:
- High School Experience - Various high schools in area. Minimum of 25 clock hours.
- Clinic Experience - Various local clinics. Minimum of 25 clock hours.
- Equipment Intense Experience - FB (must have completed ATR 175 with C or higher prior to beginning rotation). Minimum of 125 clock hours.
- Upper Extremity Experience - VB, SB, BB, FB, Field Events (must have completed ATR 275 with a C or higher prior to beginning rotation). Minimum of 125 clock hours.
- Lower Extremity Experience - MS, WS, MB, WB, VB, FB, CC, T & F (must have completed ATR 250 with a C or higher prior to beginning rotation). Minimum of 125 clock hours.
- General Medical Experience- Minimum of 25 hours @ SIU Family Practice (Must have completed ATR 350 with a C or higher prior to beginning rotation).
- Stratton Chiropractic Clinic Job Shadow (5 hours total)- concurrent with ATR 450.
- Orthopedic Job Shadow (10 hours total) - concurrent with ATR 250/ATR 275).
