Biological Chemistry, Political Science added to majors

El-Bermawy

Fistein

The EXP@CSC curriculum brings a lot of changes to the Culver-Stockton campus next fall, including the addition of two new majors. Biological chemistry helps prepare students for a career path in molecular life science, according to Mohamed El-Bermawy, PhD, associate professor of chemistry/biology. El-Bermawy said the new major provides classes and hands-on experiences in both chemistry and biology and offers courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, botany, zoology, genetics, and instrumental analysis. "The major is a solid first step for students who plan to go to graduate school to study molecular biology, biochemistry, or other program in life sciences," he added. "A major in biological chemistry is also a perfect fit for students interested in a pre-health major and looking toward careers in medicine, pharmacy, veterinary sciences, or dentistry." David Fistein, PhD, lecturer in political science/sociology, said the new political science major stems from a societal shift to greater awareness of the importance of politics. As part of the new major, C-SC students will be able to enroll in a "Model United Nations" course, which will participate in a Model U.N. conference in Chicago in November. "This program is very much in keeping with Culver-Stockton's commitment to offering a solid global education," he added. "A well-prepared, 21st century student must have a solid background in the major issues that preoccupy today's international relations." Sign up for Spring Visit Day scheduled April 19

Reservations are being accepted for prospective students to visit the C-SC campus on Saturday, April 19. Group visit days are offered to provide future students with an opportunity to hear from college administrators and a panel of current students. Campus tours and an academic and activity fair also are scheduled. If you are unable to attend the group visit day, contact your Culver-Stockton admissions counselor to arrange for a personalized visit. Nothing is more important than visiting campus to see the environment, meet students and faculty, and learn for yourself what college has to offer. For more information, click here.

Plan now to attend Summer Registration and Orientation

Three opportunities are available for incoming first-year students to register for Fall 2008 classes and to wrap up their enrollment process at Culver-Stockton College. In addition to registering for classes, students can complete their acceptance packets, pay deposits, have their photo taken to create their college ID, get answers to last-minute questions about college, and tour campus. Once you have been accepted, you can reserve your spot by completing your acceptance packet.

Pillars Scholars named

C-SC selected seven students to receive full-tuition scholarships based on their performance at the 24th annual Pillars for Excellence Scholarship competition. The Pillars Scholarship pays all tuition costs and can be renewed annually at the value of the freshman year if the student maintains a 3.2 grade point average at Culver-Stockton. The students were selected from 50 who competed to earn the scholarships. This year's Pillars candidates averaged a 3.75 grade point average in high school (on a 4.0 scale) and a 27.3 ACT score. The Pillars Scholars, all of whom will attend Culver-Stockton as freshmen beginning in fall 2008, are: Anna Arthur, Metro East Lutheran High School, daughter of Matthew and Barbara Arthur, Collinsville, Ill. (pre-pharmacy); Will Feiner, Kirksville High School, son of Lance and Sheryl Feiner, Kirksville, Mo. (undeclared major); Kate Gutheil, North Scott High School, daughter of Carla Gutheil and Mark Gutheil, both of Bettendorf, Iowa. Scholarship recipients, donors "do lunch"

Culver-Stockton College held its Annual Scholarship Luncheon recently, with more than 60 students, parents, and staff honoring 20 scholarship donors. Donors were able to explain their reasons for endowing scholarships to benefit C-SC students, and students who have received those scholarships were able to say "thanks" and express their appreciation of a Culver-Stockton education. "It was nice to finally meet my donor, in person, and to thank that person for helping me pay for my education," said Jim Varner, sophomore. "Without having my scholarship, I would have had to go to a university where I would have been just another number," added Michael Zehnle, senior."The opportunity to actually sit and speak with my scholarship donors gave me a better outlook and perspective as to where my scholarship has come from," said Jillian Bentley, senior. Wendy Powers
Powers

Dean of Student Life appointed

Culver-Stockton College has named Wendy Powers as dean of student life. Powers joined the college last summer as associate dean for student success and first-year programming. In her new position, Power will lead the campus-wide initiatives to maintain a supportive, safe, and secure environment for C-SC students. Since joining Culver-Stockton, she has been involved in revamping the programming for first-year students, especially those who have not decided on a major. Powers noted that she has been working closely with other C-SC departments on strengthening academic advising for students, helping to implement an online registration process, revitalizing the summer registration and orientation programs, strengthening the academic support and career/internship center to create a Guided Pursuit for Success program for undecided students, and establishing the Wildcat Leadership Institute for student leaders. Business students visit Kansas City corporations

A group of business majors and faculty members traveled to Kansas City recently to meet with businesses in the area and attend a reception with C-SC alumni. Board member H.B. Turner, class of '79, took students to Vistage Group, where they met with a dozen CEOs and top executives. Students also worked in small groups to develop a new product, and present their product analysis to the executive group. Turner also took students to his company, Heatron, Inc., where they worked on a Human Resources case study. The students also toured Cerner, Inc., a health care information and technology company. "The trip was truly a learning experience," said Ashley Wort, a senior from Mt. Sterling, Ill. "I learned how imperative group work is to an organization. Without it, a company cannot really be a success." For more details on this and other corporate travel by business students, see the Blogs at www.culver.edu.

Concerts, theatre wrap up semester

A bevy of Fine Arts activities caps off the 2007-08 academic year at Culver-Stockton College. The annual spring choir tour culminated in an on-campus concert on campus April 6. Several high school jazz bands converged on campus April 8 for an all-day jazz fest, crowned with an evening concert by the C-SC Jazz Ensemble. The Wind Ensemble Concert is scheduled April 13, followed by the Pops Concert on April 18. The spring calendar is also peppered by individual student recitals as part of meeting requirements for their music major, as well as guest appearances by various musical and dance performance companies. The annual Student Honors Art Exhibit, which showcases the best student artwork, opens April 17. The Fine Arts season wraps up with the annual musical. The 2008 production of The Rocky Horror Show open on April 24 and continues through April 27. Keep track of all C-SC activities with the online calendar.

Baseball, softball swing into spring

Despite a rainy spring, the Culver-Stockton baseball and softball teams are having a solid season. The baseball Wildcats, under new head coach Chris Terry, are currently 21-8 overall and 13-7 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC), ranking them 4th in the conference. The Lady Wildcats softball team is 7th in the conference with a current record of 11-16 overall and 3-3 in the HAAC. Meanwhile the men's and women's golf teams have just opened their season, and the new men's and women's track team are getting ready to host their first home meet, the Wildcat Open, on the Richeson Track April 19. Individual competitors continue to place well at the meets. Follow the Wildcats online.
