New Culver-Stockton website launches December 15

Culver-Stockton will launch a re-designed and enhanced website (www.culver.edu) for the college on December 15. We have developed the website to provide you with more information in a more easily navigated format. You will find that the website continues to change over time as we add content and enhanced functionality. The website will not only provide information about programs and events, it also will offer a look at some of our Culver-Stockton people, news coverage, and blogs. In 2008, we also will be launching a portal that will provide additional tools for accepted students, current students, faculty and staff. Be sure to contact us through the website if you have suggestions or contact communications@culver.edu.

Our blog will follow students and faculty in China.

C-SC faculty and students traveling to China

CANTON, Mo. -- About 20 Culver-Stockton College students and faculty members will be spending New Year's in China on a 10-day trip that focuses on gaining insight into Chinese business and the Chinese approach to education. As part of C-SC's study abroad programming, the travelers will leave the United States on December 27, spend 10 days in China, and return to the United States on January 8. The group will visit several cities to see factories, technology centers, cultural sites, and schools. Culver-Stockton has designed its study-abroad program to offer two- to three-week learning experiences each year. The shorter programs allow students and faculty to share a learning experience by traveling together. C-SC also offers more traditional study-abroad programs that allow individual students to study at a foreign college or university for extended periods of time -- a semester or a year. Academic credit is given for study-abroad programs. C-SC students will be posting blogs from China during their trip on the college's website (www.culver.edu). > Full story

Faculty approves changes to enhance Culver-Stockton curriculum

The Culver-Stockton faculty has agreed to a framework for revamping the college's curriculum. The restructuring is still under way, but basically will change the academic calendar, provide experiential opportunities in every major, create a uniform general education program for all majors, re-examine foreign language requirements, and allow students to create personalized interdisciplinary majors. The first phase of the new curriculum goes into effect in Fall 2008 when each semester will be divided into a 12-week session, when students take three to four classes, and a 3-week session, when students take only one in-depth class and participate in an experiential program like an internship or study-abroad opportunity. Customized interdisciplinary majors are part of the second phase, scheduled for Fall 2009; and revising foreign language requirements is part of the third phase, scheduled for Fall 2010. These innovations offer much greater flexibility to students as well as providing hands-on experiences in every major. The uniform general education program means that if students decide to change their major, they will not have to take any additional general education classes. We will continue to announce details of the changing curriculum as it takes shape over the next few months.

Business students help Lewis Street Playhouse reopen in Canton

John Tripp and his class developed a business plan for the movie theater.

Students in Culver-Stockton's business strategy class have completed a business plan for the Lewis Street Playhouse in Canton. The old opera house is being completely renovated and will re-open shortly as a movie theater and entertainment venue. Members of the class conducted market research, developed demographics, and made financial projects for the new business venture. The business plan development serves as the capstone project requirement for the class. Through a capstone project, students apply what they have learned in their classes to a real business scenario.

Apply early to reserve financial aid package

Over the holidays is the best time to complete your application to Culver-Stockton College. In addition to sending in your application, be sure to submit Culver-Stockton's online financial aid estimator early. Once we have that estimate, we reserve your financial aid package until the March 1 deadline. Another key step is to complete your FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1 and use the C-SC code (002460) to guarantee we receive your information. Culver-Stockton's priority deadline for maximum funding consideration is March 1, so completing all three steps by February is important. For more information, visit www.culver.edu/value

C-SC student teachers discuss teaching with area professionals.

Student teachers form "connections" through workshop

"Making Connections" was the theme of the student teaching workshop that was held recently at Culver-Stockton. Workshop sessions helped students reflect on what they are doing as student teachers in the classroom and focus on skills that will help them secure a teaching job -- making connections with the real world of the classroom teacher, as well as between their college assignments and designing daily lesson plans. "Building connections between theory and practice, between teaching and learning, and between knowing and doing are important when you are getting ready to step into the real world of teaching," said Ann Hammer, C-SC director of teacher education. > Full story
