Sigma Phi Epsilon History
The Final Chapter: 1974-1993 - Notable Quotes
- Tom Schroeder '75: I was back not too long ago on a recruiting trip and what memories it brought back, as I hadn't been in Canton or at Culver in over 20 years. I can't think of being a student at Culver and not being a Sig Ep. See you in October.
- Bob Shelton '74: I am still somewhat active on campus, as my son Luke will graduate this spring. The friendships that I established with the Sig Eps is one of the great parts of my life. Being part of the Springfield connection, with Tom Langford, Bill and Mark Scheffler, Dave Copi and Kent Starkey was a wonderful legacy.
- Don Shoemaker '78: Winning almost every IM game and I have the particular honor of rooming with Sig Ep Dan Boone and sleeping in Sig Ep Davy Crockett's bed. John Sperry was the finest educator I have ever encountered. I see Jed Heisel, Hank Warrn, Scott Griffiths, Jim Burns, Bob Ripley and Bob Cook on a regular basis. Since I married a Canton girl, I was back recently. See you in October.
- Mike Elliott '75: The IM schedule--always a hoot. I also enjoyed our dinnertime camaraderie. As President, I am proud of initiating the Little Sisters program. Dean Williams and Professor Al Beck were most inspirational. I was honored as an Outstanding Alumni a few years back and see Tom Schroeder regularly.
- Frank Canada '76: My pledge class was tremendous. Rick Borisenko, Steve Cramer, Robbie White and Vince Okruch. Was part of a fraternity kidnapping of an active that went okay, minus the wear that the "borrowed" car I had procured. What great experience. Work with ConAgra Foods as a Regional Manager and stay in touch with Mark Borsch. Haven't been back since l987, but hope to attend.
- Ron Dempsay '76: Raising money with our 48 hour basketball marathon. I had come to Culver from the military and enjoyed my house experience, even though I was married and had children. I was sort of adopted by Doris and Harry Higgins and they were wonderful to me and my family. After a stint in the Missouri Highway Patrol, I am now the Principal at Unity Middle School in Mendon, Illinois. See Norm Richards on a regular basis.
- Dennis Fanger '80: Hearing my name being read off as a new Sig Ep pledge put me on top of the world, so to speak. Great friends and super memories. I stay in touch with the likes of Steve Bendel, Bill Zelle, Charlie Nager, Greg Pointer and Phil Watson and am professionally employed as the St. Louis City Building Inspector.
- William Zelle '81: Becoming an active was the greatest thrill. Gene Hall, Gerry Maulin, Jack McBride, Richard Holmes and John Sperry were academically my backbone and support. Although I haven't been back in over a decade, I stay in touch with Joe Gebhardt, Phil Watson, Charlie Nager and Bob Higginbothem on a regular basis.
- Mike Musick '82: Just living with the guys was a treat. Jack McBride never ceased to dispense advise to me, whether I needed it or not. I am the Associate Principal at Clayton High School and the District lets me coach football as well. Always stay in touch with Charlie Nager and hope to return this fall.
- Robert Porter '89: My Sig Ep years were some of the best times of my life. Being from Canton, most of those guys were Hawks, but there was just something about the Sig Ep House that I wanted. We went through some difficult times, but hung together. Perhaps it was those times that enhanced my career as I am now a Parole Officer in St. Charles, Missouri. Get a chance to see Eric Zanger, Kevin Porter, Devin Scheufele and Tom Thompson. Along with some others, they sang the Sweetheart Song at my wedding and that is a tradition that is something special. Digging the pit for Derby Day always was a trip.
- Pat Bell '90: Moleland, Derby Day and IM's. A great trio! Dr. Jim Cosgrove, Registrar Terry Scherer, Dr. Charles Blose, Dr. Tom Kenney--great educators all. Enjoying being a DSL Expert with SBC Communications and wills see many old and new friends in the fall.
- Eric Zanger '90: Lots of heavy metal music in Moleland. The critters liked it. Great preparation for being a HS teacher in Springfield. Always stay in touch with the likes of Shaun Carey, Jeff Kroencke, Rob Porter, Dave Helmkamp, Pat Bell, Rick Wiley, Kevin Porter, Tom Thompson, Kevin Scheufele and Jim Archambeau. We see each other at the Quincy K of C Barbecue each August.
- Mike Wilson '85: The mixers with the sororities were super; it is where I met my future wife. The General--George Lee--was a great teacher and quite inspirational. After many years helping at-risk kids, I am now teaching Elementary School in St. Louis. Haven't been back in over 10 years. Hope to see many at homecoming.
- Kevin Dingman '86: Great being part of the great renovation in the 80's. Thanks to Bob Cook and Joel Campe for their tireless efforts. Derby Days were great; my photography career has taken me to an educational position at the University of Missouri. Somewhere I have a picture of Dr. Brown leaning on Sig Ep Sam at Derby Day. Hope to bring it in October.
- Robert Califf '82: The friends I met turned into lifetime acquaintances. Was lucky enough to become a 6th Grade teacher and Head Baseball Coach in my hometown of Hamilton, Illinois. Stay in touch with Joe Gebhardt, Charlie Nager, Greg Pointer and Dr. Mike Musick. Was back in 2003 and hope to return this year.
- Ed Fitspatrick '97: Never got to go active and was the last pledge standing, so to speak, when the house was closed in l993. Still, I made some wonderful friends and was inspired by Bob Galloway, my Speech Professor. My skills as a technical theater director has served me well from my Culver days. Was at Culver visiting Mike York, who still works in the Culver theater department.
