Don BrunsTo say that Katie Thomas ’10 enjoys her job would be an understatement. “I get paid to do what most people do for fun on the weekends,” she explains. After graduating from Culver-Stockton College in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree, Thomas went on to enroll in graduate school at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill. While pursuing her master’s degree in sport management, Thomas is also working as a graduate assistant for intramurals at WIU. Her day-to-day responsibilities include developing intramural tournaments, scheduling leagues, training officials and providing oversight for the sports. “It’s a perfect fit for me,” says Thomas. “Getting into this graduate assistantship has sealed the deal on exactly what I want to do beyond graduate school.”  Thomas says her goal is to eventually become a director of intramural sports at a college or university.

She credits Culver-Stockton College with helping her reach the point she’s at today. “The small school atmosphere was a great learning environment. I was close with some of the staff members and they helped me get to where I am today. I am still in touch with some of my professors and the staff members who I worked with. They connected me with the right people at WIU in order to get me into the program and department that I am in today.”  While at Culver-Stockton, Thomas was a member of Christians in Action, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Student Athletic Training Organization, she was a Community Assistant; she also played for the Lady Wildcats softball team and various intramural sports. Given her passion for athletics, it’s not surprising that Thomas’ fondest memories from her time on ‘the Hill’ involve being active – including events like mud sliding, mud wrestling, taking part in intramural sports, game nights and water balloon fights, just to name a few.   “I don’t know what life would be like without Culver-Stockton,” say Thomas. “I met the most amazing people there, and continue to meet amazing people when I come back to visit. Some people graduate from C-SC and never look back; however, I can’t help but to look back on the institution - it gave me what I need to be successful.”
