Wildcats drop a pair of one-run games
Wednesday, March 10, 2010
The Culver-Stockton College baseball team fell to 0-6 in one-run games this season after a pair of 6-5 losses to Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan., Wednesday afternoon.
The Wildcats led 5-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning in the opener only to see Baker rally for five runs to tie the game and send the game to extra innings.
Baker would push across a run in the bottom of the inning to drop the Wildcats to 0-3 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play and 4-9 overall.
Nicko Garibay continued his hot hitting with three hits in four at-bats to lead the Wildcats. Jeremy Malmendier, Kurt Kessler and Will Fisher all collected two hits for the visitors.
Jason Payne went the first six innings, allowing three runs (2 earned) and two hits while striking out six. However, the bulpen failed him as three relievers allowed five walks in just an inning and two-thirds.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats tried to turn the tables and create a rally of their own, but fell short. Trailing 6-0 after four innings, the Wildcats plated four runs in the sixth inning and a single run in the seventh.
Jared Thompson was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI while Cecil Richardson was 2 for 4 with an RBI to lead the Wildcats. Malmendier also had two hits for C-SC.
The Wildcats will try to get their first HAAC victories on Saturday, March 13, when they play at Avila University in Kansas City, Mo. Game time for the opener is slated for 1 p.m.
