Former Wildcat signs minor league contract
Tuesday, January 03, 2012

Sal Rivera |
Former Culver-Stockton College outfielder Sal Rivera '11 signed a minor league deal with the Las Cruces Vaqueros in September. The Vaqueros are part of the Pecos League, which is an independent league based out of Houston, Texas. The Pecos League stretches from western Texas to eastern New Mexico.
The Wildcat alum of Culver Stockton College, located in Canton, Mo., is the only player to sign professionally from the 2011 Heart of America Athletic Conference Champions. The Wildcats finished the 2011 season with a 37-17 overall record and captured their seventh HAAC regular season championship with a 24-4 league mark. Culver-Stockton advanced to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Tournament, going 1-2 in tournament play.
Rivera, of Sacramento, Calif. (Sheldon HS), batted .391 with 50 hits, including 10 doubles, two triples and two home runs during the regular season of his senior year. He recorded 22 RBI and scored a team-high 41 runs. In addition, Rivera had a slugging percentage of .547 and an on-base percentage of .518 from his leadoff spot in the order. He captured the Gold Glove in the outfield on the strength of not committing an error in 57 chances. He ended his college career in the Wildcat record books, finishing in the top 10 of nine different offensive categories.
Rivera will also reunite with his summer collegiate coach Casey Dill, of the Nor Cal Pirates. The Nor Cal Pirates are a semi pro summer collegiate team based out of Chico, CA. Two weeks after being announced the Manager of the Las Cruces Vaqueros professional baseball team, Casey Dill signed the local standout. Rivera, the first player Dill signed after being named Manager of the Vaqueros, was the 2010 Nor Cal pirates Rookie of the Year.
"Sal is a pro, he can do it all and has a tremendous desire to be successful in the game of baseball, I'm looking forward to having him back at the top of the lineup," Dill said.
During Rivera’s time with the Pirates, he finished the summer with a .429 batting average, .571 slugging percentage, and .526 on base percentage. The Sacramento native led the team in all three of the categories and was the table setter at the top of the lineup for Coach Dill.
