News:
Windham named next men's hoops coach
Thursday, May 08, 2008

Culver-Stockton College Director of Athletics Rod Walton has announced the hiring of John Windham as head men’s basketball coach. Windham, the 22nd head coach in the program’s history, replaces Brad Hoyt, who resigned on March 6 after three seasons.

Windham comes to the Wildcats after serving the last six years as head coach at Virginia Episcopal School, a college prep school located in Lynchburg, Va. compiling a 96-57 (64 percent) career record. His teams have been ranked in the top 10 in the Virginia Independent Conference every season, and he was named conference coach of the year after the 2006-07 season.

“We’re excited about having John’s experience in coaching, teaching and recruiting come to Culver-Stockton,” said Rod Walton, Culver-Stockton athletic director. “He will be a good fit for us and an effective recruiter with his breadth of contacts across the Midwest and East Coast.”

“I appreciate the opportunity to teach and coach at an institution that has an outstanding academic reputation, as well as participating in one of the more competitive conferences in the NAIA,” Windham said. “Being from the Midwest, this coaching position is also a chance to move back to where my career started.”

Prior to his stop in Virginia, Windham was the head coach at Rowland Hall-St. Marks, a college prep school in Salt Lake City, Utah, from 1995-2002. Windham took Rowland-St. Marks from last place to a region championship and a state semifinal appearance in five years. His team was state-ranked in each of his last three years there. He was voted the Utah State 2A Coach of the Year after the 1999-00 and the 2001-02 seasons.

Windham’s collegiate coaching experience consists of being a volunteer assistant at West Chester University in West Chester, Pa., from 1994-95. The team qualified for the NCAA Division II tournament twice during his stay. He also was a graduate assistant at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.

In addition, Windham also has experience at the pro level where he was the head coach in the Swedish Basketball League in Likoping, Sweden, from 1992-94. He coached the team to a southern division national championship in his first season and compiled a .700 winning percentage over the years.

Windham said he hopes to use his experience to turn around the Wildcat men’s basketball team and bring in successful seasons. “My experience with the staples of every basketball program makes me ready to takes on this challenge,” he added. “The team will be prepared for the season, and that will enable the team to be successful. Once they have some success that, in turn, will instill confidence; and confidence will create more success; and so on and so on.”

Windham was awarded a bachelor’s of science degree from Western Illinois University in Macomb in 1978, and a master of arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1981.
