Free Throws Lift Avila over Lady Wildcats
Saturday, January 28, 2012

Avila University did most of its damage in the second half from the free throw line in overcoming a nine-point deficit to defeat the Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles, who trailed 39-30 at halftime, made 24 of their 27 free throw attempts in the second half, and outscored the hosts 38-16 overall from the stripe in earning a 74-68 victory.

The Lady Wildcats built their first half lead on the strength of strong shooting from the field, making 13 of their 28 first half attempts for 46.4 percent.

However, C-SC cooled off in the second half to 30 percent (9 for 30) and the parade to the foul line by the Eagles was too much to overcome.

Jessie Logsdon, making her second start since coming off the injury list on Jan. 19, paced the Lady Wildcat attack with 18 points and a game-high five assists.

Leading scorer Aneshia Starks was limited to 13 points and a team-high six rebounds before fouling out. Tromesa May and Monica Wilson each recorded nine points.

C-SC, now 11-12 overall and 3-8 in the HAAC, is off until next Saturday, Feb. 4, when they travel to Peru, Neb., to face Peru State College in a HAAC contest. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
