Commencement

Six words sum up C-SC Commencement address:
'dream, work, trust God, never forget'

CANTON, Mo. – Culver-Stockton College Commencement speaker Donald Claycomb told graduates today that he came to deliver a simple message of six words: dream, work, trust God, never forget. Claycomb has been president of Linn State Technical College, Linn, Mo., for 15 years. He spoke at C-SC's 152nd Commencement on May 10.

"Dreams give us purpose," Claycomb said. "Dream big about all aspects of your life especially professional, personal, and service to others. In other words have balance to your life."

Hard work can make dreams come true, Claycomb said. "People I know who have actualized their dreams have worked hard and have worked smart," he added. "It does not seem anything substitutes for work in paying the price to make our dreams come true."

Trusting God is an important part of the balance for success, Claycomb added. "Trusting God played an important role in the lives of those who have shaped Culver-Stockton College," he said. "Trusting God has played an important role in my life. Many times I've said, 'God, this is over my head. I'll give it my all but I'm depending on you for the outcome to be best for all concerned.' Trusting God has no doubt played an important role in the lives of many who have shaped you and made it possible for you to cross this stage today."

Claycomb also urged graduates to never forget Culver-Stockton and its importance in their lives. "Never forget those loved ones who are with you today in body or in spirit who are just as proud, if not more so, of what this day means and the dream they have had that is being fulfilled. You are in their hearts today," he added.

Joking that commencement addresses are easily forgotten, Claycomb concluded, "Remember any of these six simple words for 24 hours, and my address will have been a success. Practice them for a lifetime, and you will be happier as well as the world being a better place."
Claycomb, who serves on the Culver-Stockton Board of Trustees, was one of two members of the board to receive honorary doctor of humane letters degrees from the college Saturday. Also honored was Donald Gnuse, chairman of the C-SC Board, and retired president of First Bankers Trust Co., Quincy, Ill.

Graduating senior Michael Zehnle also addressed the 189 member of the C-SC Class of 2008. Zehnle, an honors scholar, earned his bachelor's of science degree with a math major. He played football for four years at Culver-Stockton and was named as a scholar-athlete by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and as an NAIA Region V Scholar-Athlete. He is the son of Mary Howald of Center, Mo., and Robert Zehnle of Quincy, Ill.
