First Year Experience
The Culver-Stockton College First-Year Experience (FYE) course is intended to assist new students with the intellectual, academic, and social transition to higher education. Students in this course are united by a shared interest which will serve as a catalyst for intellectual pursuit, developing academic success skills, making connections campus-wide, and adjusting to collegiate expectations.
Culver-Stockton College honored as Model of Excellence
Culver-Stockton College was one of six institutions being honored by University Business in its Summer 2015 Model of Excellence recognition program. Culver-Stockton College was recognized for its Passport to Success program, completed by all first year students.
The Passport to Success program was implemented as a way to introduce and familiarize students to the resources available to them as students of Culver-Stockton College. Integrated into the Freshman Year Experience course, students get 17 stamps on their passport after completing required activities around campus, including meeting with their academic advisor, visiting the library and attending alcohol safety training. In conjunction with other efforts, freshman to sophomore retention has increased 11 percent since the program was introduced in 2012.
When freshmen and some transfer students (less than 24 college credits) register for the first semester at C-SC, they choose from First-Year Experience course topics, as a regular college-level course (3 credit hours). Many of the topics are related to themes from a common reading assignment that students are required to complete over the summer. Every FYE course includes an intensive writing component.

- Build the skills for academic success – studying, note taking and test taking
- Strengthen fundamental life skills – critical thinking, stress and time management and self-discipline
- Gain appreciation for C-SC as a comprehensive college while exploring its policies, procedures and academic expectations
- Clarify personal career goals/possibilities and what is required to achieve them
- Develop confidence and the willingness to explore ideas in writing
- Articulate ideas in writing accurately, efficiently and effectively through journaling and class assignments
- Use writing to think, learn and communicate
