English
At Culver-Stockton, the English and English education programs develop mastery of writing, researching, and critical-thinking skills. We advance your knowledge of literature and the English language in preparation for graduate study and careers in teaching or writing.
The general areas of study include courses in English, American, and world literature, English language, literary theory, and creative writing. Completing a major in English requires 36 hours of coursework, including 18 hours of electives. Completing a major in English with a secondary education emphasis requires 35 hours of coursework, and the student must satisfy the requirements for certification in education. Students also may complete a minor in English or in creative writing.
To develop writing, editing, layout, and management skills associated with publishing, you can earn credit for joining the staff of the C-SC literary magazine, Harmony, or the student newspaper, Megaphone.
Graduates frequently pursue advanced English studies in graduate school. Others are prepared for careers in teaching and writing-based professions such as publishing, editing, public relations, or technical writing. The program also provides excellent pre-professional foundations for careers in law or ministry and, when combined with areas like business, can provide career opportunities in the corporate world.

Important information about the English major and minor are contained in the English Department Handbook (pdf). All students of the department should download this handbook, read it, and keep it as a reference.
