Summer Projects 2008

Summary and timeline

Henderson Hall Facelift . . . view details
With a need to have good curb appeal for visitors to admissions, the main level of Henderson Hall will receive a facelift, and certain exterior concrete repaving. This includes a newly-designated visitor’s parking lot.
Timeline for work: June/August

Campus Lighting . . . view details
At the request of students, a night lighting audit has indicated some additional lighting to be installed. Also a new campus lighting design will debut at the newly-created entrance greenspace. This will be the pattern for future lighting.
Timeline for work: June/July

Entrance Road . . . view details
In addition to repaving the asphalt sections of the entrance road, the curbing is being modified to expand the greenspace at the entrance, removing several parking places crowding the roadway. Landscaping and ornamental post-and-chain will give the area a refined, classy appearance.
Timeline for work: May

Herrick Facelift . . . view details
The exterior sections of former windows have been repainted, and eight windows replaced with modern energy-efficient clad sashes. Inside, the main-level flooring will be replaced with designer-chosen floorcoverings.
Timeline for work: April for exterior painting; July for floor covering.

Johann Facelift . . . view details
The main-level classrooms will be air-conditioned and receive all new tables and chairs to replace the old-style integral desks. The hallways will be painted and carpeted. In the library, partial carpet replacement and new paint will refresh the heavily used portions.
Timeline for work: June for painting/air-conditioning, July for carpet and classroom furniture installation.

Kitchen Facelift and Equipment . . . view details
This project makes improvements to both the serving and preparation side of the kitchen. It features a complete servery facelift, with new ceiling, lighting, flooring and paint. In the kitchen, new and replacement equipment will improve food preparation options.
Timeline for work: May for the facelift; equipment changes throughout the summer.

Laundry . . . view details
Every washer and dryer on campus has been removed and will be replaced by new equipment – not coin-operated – which means laundry service next fall is free. Every laundry room also will be refreshed this summer. Depending on their current condition, laundry rooms will have floors repaired, be re-painted, and get new lighting.
Timeline for work: June/July

Lounge, Commuter . . . view details
Summary: Student Life has placed the creation of a new lounge for the nearly 200 commuter students as a high priority. Space will be transformed from a current storeroom (interesting history – it once was used for, of all things, a student lounge!) into a pleasant and functional space for commuter students to have a separate area. It will be in the Crown Center, the heart of campus.
Timeline for work: June/July

Lounge, Shannon . . . view details
This project, at the request of Student Life, will reclaim the large main-level lounge space, currently unused. A new HVAC system will make it comfortable year-round, and the flat-panel TV viewable from new, comfortable furniture. In addition to paint in the lounge, all hallways will receive a colorful paint scheme differentiating the different gender floors.
Timeline for work: June/July

Lounge, Wood . . . view details
Extensive remodeling will occur in the main-level lounge, including all new flooring, paint, lighting and furniture. The lower-level lounge will also be the site of a large flat-panel TV.
Timeline for work: June/July

Mattresses . . . view details
The students were able to provide input on the mattresses to replace all mattresses currently in use on campus. They feature a dual-firmness option selectable by the user (one side has extra-firm padding), and are in full compliance with stringent new flammability standards.
Timeline for work: July

Sidewalks/steps . . . view details
Years of cumulative salt damage will be remedied by extensive new paving of sidewalks and steps. Some widening will occur, and all paving will be with thicker, reinforced high-strength concrete. Stairs will include safety tread nosing and double handrails.
Timeline for work: June/July
