Culver-Stockton to Host St. Louis African Chorus
Sunday, February 13, 2005

Africa’s culture and heritage will be brought to life and celebrated through music at Culver-Stockton College, as it presents the St. Louis African Chorus. The performance will be held on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 3 p.m. in Alexander Campbell Auditorium, on campus in Canton, Mo. The event is free and open to the public.

In 1994, the chorus was founded to foster a better understanding of African cultural heritage through music and art. The ensemble’s membership is open to individuals from all racial and ethnic groups who desire to share its philosophy of promoting peace and love through the arts. The chorus trains a local ensemble of singers, drummers and dancers. Performances are opportunities to experience the wealth and magic of African choral music. The music engages audiences to move, clap and sing; and a performer-audience interaction often recreates scenes from traditional African life.

St. Louis African Chorus also provides outreach and youth education programs. Its programs have become a resource for scholars and the general public to receive instruction and information about Africa and the roots of African American art forms. The chorus also includes a multidisciplinary art project for youth, who meet weekly for after school instruction in choral music, percussion and dance. Through the African Music for Community Healing program, the chorus schedules mini-concerts and culturally enriching events in nursing homes and other assisted-living facilities.

The performance is in recognition of Black History month and is offered as part of the college’s Academic and Cultural Events Program. Funding assistance for this project has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
