The exhibit of photographs by Sandy Dyas goes up in the Mabee Art Gallery from September 3-26, with an opening reception at 7 p.m. on September 3. Dyas has worked as a photographic artist and commercial photographer for more than 30 years. Her most recent book of photographs, “Down to the River: Portraits of Iowa Musicians,” was published by the Iowa Press in 2007 and captures two decades of photographing live music venues and portraits of musicians. “What strikes me about compelling artwork is the passion that lies within it. Like great music, it must hold some brand of magical mystery, some soulful honesty, or it will not move me,” Dyas said. The artist also specializes in capturing what she calls the “lost nation.” “Having grown up in the '50's and '60's, I feel a sense of loss as to what I once considered America to be and what it looked like. In that brokenness and change, there is still a very strong spirit of living. I am drawn to this spirit . . . the hope and hopelessness of life,” she explained. Dyas said her work reflects her life in the Midwest -- small town carnivals, abandoned houses, gravel roads, broken down little towns. “It is the antithesis of the shiny new America we see on television and in our media. It is a side of life that not everyone knows about, nor cares to,” Dyas said.” I am drawn to it because it is what I know. I am in love with the oddness of life, its beauty and its honesty.” Dyas is a lecturer in the Department of Art at Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, and an adjunct professor of art at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. Other exhibits scheduled during the 2008-09 academic year in the Mabee Art Gallery on the C-SC campus are the alumni art show, October 2-November 2; an exhibit of the two-dimensional works of Amy Sacksteder, November 10-December 5; an exhibit of prints created by Anne Klingensmith and David Kamm, January 12-February 27; the C-SC senior art show, March 21-April 3; and the student honors show, April 17-May 8.
