‘Dinner with Friends,' Rabbit Hole’ Launch 2008-09 Theatre Season
Tuesday, July 15, 2008
CANTON, Mo. – Culver-Stockton College will launch its 2008-09 theatre season with productions of two Pulitzer Prize-winning dramas in September. "Dinner with Friends," by Donald Margulies, will be performed September 18-21 and "Rabbit Hole" by David Lindsay-Abaire will be performed September 25-28.
"Dinner with Friends" tells the story of a suburban couple, Gabe and Karen, who are international food writers and who introduce two friends, Beth and Tom, who get married. When Tom later declares his unhappiness and leaves Beth for another woman, it causes Gabe and Karen to question their own relationship.
When he wrote the play, Margulies said that like all his other works, "Dinner with Friends" reflects “observations I’m having at that time in my life... All around us, relationships are changing, marriages are breaking up. It’s those notions of impermanence, the yearning for something else that I’m tapping into.” "Dinner with Friends" began as a commissioned work for the Actors Theater of Louisville and opened off Broadway in New York City in 1999. The play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2000 and has received several other awards. In 2001, it was adapted into a movie.
The Culver-Stockton production of "Dinner with Friends," directed by Haidee Heaton, will be staged at 7:30 p.m. September 18, 19, and 20 and at 3 p.m. September 21 in Mabee Little Theater in the C-SC Performing Arts Center.
Just a week later, Culver-Stockton students will perform in "Rabbit Hole," which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2007. The play follows the story of an investment banker, Howie, and his wife, Becca, as they try to cope with the death of their young son, save their marriage, and restart their lives. The play was first performed in 2005 at the Pacific Playwrights Festival reading series. It opened in New York City in 2006 and ran for 77 performances. Nominated for several Tony Awards, it received a Tony for best actress. It is currently being made into a movie.
The Culver-Stockton production of "Rabbit Hole," directed by S. Kent Miller, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. September 25, 26, and 27 and at 3 p.m. September 28 in Mabee Little Theater in the C-SC Performing Arts Center.
Tickets for these C-SC productions are $6 for adults and $4 for students.
Other C-SC productions planned for 2008-09 include "1940s Radio Hour" (October 30-November 2), "The Cherry Orchard" (February 19-22), and "The Foreigner" (April 2-5).
