Metro Theatre presents "New Kid" at C-SC
Wednesday, September 17, 2008

CANTON, Mo. – The Metro Theatre of St. Louis will stage “New Kid” in the Performing Arts Center on the Culver-Stockton College Campus at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 8. The performance is free and open to the public.

“New Kid,” written by author and playwright Dennis Foon, tells the story of a young immigrant to America and his mother as he encounters the teasing, bullying, and confusion that often occur.

To create a more true-to-life experience for an audience trying to appreciate the confusion surrounding such “newness,” Foon has the “new kid” and his mother speak English and the other cast members speak an invented language.

A Detroit, Mich., native who transplanted himself to Vancouver, Canada, Foon originally wrote the play as “New Canadian Kid.” Foon says, “I kept directing it, and refining it, until it became a wonderful piece of physical and verbal comedy that has lot to say about being the new kid. It's been performed all over the world in many languages, and I'm told it's one of the most produced Canadian plays in history.”

Metro Theatre Company of St. Louis was founded in 1973. Its annual tours of theatrical productions have been seen in schools, community centers, theatres, and major venues in 40 states.

The performance is offered as part of the college’s Academic and Cultural Events (ACE) program. Funding assistance for this project has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
