C-SC dedicates classroom to alumnus Thomas J. Hartigan

CANTON, Mo. – Culver-Stockton College President William Fox led a ceremony October 3 to dedicate Room 204, in the Herrick Foundation Center in honor of alumnus Thomas J. Hartigan. The event was attended by C-SC accounting students, faculty, and staff as well as friends and family members of Hartigan, including his widow Mary (Smith) Hartigan, a member of the C-SC class of 1954.
During the ceremony, several people who were close to Hartigan gave insight as to what he was like. Mary Hartigan told about her late husband’s college days in athletics and about his social nature on the C-SC campus. The Thomas J. Hartigan Lecture Hall holds 22 computers for students as well as a projector and screen to help with teaching. Professor Dell Ann Janney, chair of the business division, who teaches an accounting class in the room, expressed her appreciation of the classroom to the Hartigan family during the ceremony.
Hartigan served as the first president of the Missouri chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon, a fraternity that was active on the C-SC campus from 1946-1993, with more than 400 members. He also helped form Beta Sigma Gamma, a local fraternity, which later became charter members of the Missouri Epsilon of Sigma Phi Epsilon. The fraternity purchased a new home located at 801 White St. in Canton. Hartigan graduated from C-SC in 1953 with a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration. He owned T.H.E. Swimwear, Huntington Park, Calif. Hartigan died in October 2005.
