“I like the EXP@CSC curriculum so far. It has relieved some of the stress of a full 15-week schedule,” says Drew Thompson, sophomore biology/pre-medicine major, who is taking “Survey of Music Literature” as his three-week course. Students will travel to Chicago, Ill., to take part in the Midwest Band Clinic as a part of this class. “I expect to gain more knowledge than I had before due to the frequent repetition of the class,” says Thompson. Several other C-SC students are traveling to Chicago during the three-week EXP@CSC term to visit the Art Institute of Chicago, several Chicago corporations, museums, and historical sites. “I’m taking ‘Reading in Content Areas,’ during the three-week semester. The class is great because it has answered a lot of the questions I had about teaching. I am also planning on taking the study abroad course to the British Isles next semester, and I can’t wait,” says Erin McLaughlin, junior art education major. This semester, students are traveling to Turkey to study the Byzantine Empire as a part of the study abroad course. “I’ve heard that a rock climbing trip to Colorado might happen next year. I would like to take that as a blend of a physical education course with other learning,” said Will Ryan, sophomore history and political science major, when asked about what type of courses he would like to take in the future. Several classes will travel to St. Louis, Mo., this semester including the “Sports Marketing” class in which students will get to view the behind-the-scenes activities at several different sports venues; the “History and Philosophy of Science” students will spend a day at the St. Louis Science Center, and students in the “Risk Management” class will visit the Federal Reserve and a St. Louis business, Protiviti Risk Management Consulting. Other courses offered this semester include “Global Business,” in which students are visiting several businesses in Illinois including ADM and John Deere; “Current Issues in Criminal Justice,” which will take students on “ride alongs” with several local and regional law enforcement agencies; “Race and Ethnicity in our Region,” which will take students to New Philadelphia, Ill., the first town founded by an African American; and “Community Media,” during which students will have the opportunity to take several day trips to local and regional media outlets.
