C-SC to host giant map of Africa
Tuesday, February 10, 2009

CANTON, MO. – Culver-Stockton College will host its second giant National Geographic map, a map of Africa, in the Charles Field House, Wednesday, March 4, through Monday, March 9, as a part of the C-SC “Schoolhouse Connections” program. This giant map of Africa is a touring project with National Geographic and was the first map to begin touring in 2006. The map is the world’s largest map of the continent weighing in at 102 pounds and measuring 35 feet by 26 feet.

The map is designed to be like a game board, complete with a trunk full of accessories, interactive activities, games, books, videos, and music that relate to Africa. The games teach the students not only about the physical characteristics of the continent but about Africa’s rich history and culture.

“Children have a whole new perspective on Africa after they’ve walked on this map,” said Dan Beaupre, National Geographic’s director of education partnerships. “The hands-on and feet-on experience brings the geography of Africa to life in a meaningful way and helps the students understand the connections between people and places.”

“It will be exciting to see how students react to a country that is home to some of the world’s largest challenges,” said Terry Sherer, chair of the C-SC Education and Applied Arts Division.

The map will be open for public viewing Wednesday, March 4, from 12 noon until 8 p.m. as well as Thursday, March 5, through Monday, March 9, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

C-SC asks that reservations be made for groups. To make a reservation or for more information, call Mary Lindsey, secretary for the Division of Education, at 573-288-6471.
