Time flies…We have all heard that saying for as long as we can remember but right now I am realizing, as I am sure many of you are as well, how true it really is. Despite the fact that we may have thought time was standing still during a lecture, or that finals week was never going to end, time really does fly by. While time passes as quickly as it does, we have all learned that change is something that undeniably goes hand-in-hand with time. As seniors at Culver-Stockton we have seen many changes in the past four years. A new track, new students, new professors, however, the biggest of these changes was our curriculum; Moving away from the traditional 15-week semester and to the 12/3 semester known fondly as EXP@CSC. As we left tradition behind and entered the territory of this new curriculum, we adopted a marketing tagline consisting of three simple words that we can all learn a lot from: expect, explore, experience. These words have different meanings to every one of us but I encourage you to take these words of inspiration and apply them as your mantra for entering the “real world.” Every single one of us will be thrown into new situations very shortly; we will meet new people, and go different places, and using these words is a good way to approach each new life event we come across. Expect: Expect the best in others but don’t be discouraged if they let you down, expect the best in yourself but remember you aren’t always going to be perfect, and expect that if you work hard you will reap the benefits. Explore: Explore your ambitions, your thoughts, your dreams, and do what you need to in order to make them come true. Explore the little things, explore the big things, and explore all options, all possibilities. Explore beyond what you think your limits are. With every exploration comes a new life lesson, so explore the world around you and all it has to offer. Experience: Experience life-changing events, experience the details of everyday life, experience all that life has to offer, experience life. Do something you have never done, take the good with the bad, and know that every experience has the potential to make you a better person. It is our experiences that define who and what we are. These words and definitions that I have offered are only the foundation for our success. It is up to each and every one of us to expand on this foundation. Each new definition that comes from our life experiences is an addition to what Culver-Stockton College has started for us. I never thought that making the decision to transfer to Culver-Stockton College would have as big of an impact on my life as it has. I realized that I expected more out of my collegiate experience than I was obtaining from the previous school I attended. So, I took my chances and explored this college that I had never heard anything about. I was nervous when I made my decision to change the path I was on, but I did not let that stop me. I arrived on the Culver-Stockton campus and immediately looked for new experiences that I could be a part of. None of this was easy, I was scared, but I went outside of my comfort zone and found that all of the nervousness and anxiety was worth it. Without realizing it I was already applying the Culver-Stockton tagline - expect, explore, experience - and I am more than happy with the results. If we all continue to follow these words of advice throughout our lives, the results will be unimaginable. Barriers can be broken down that we never thought possible, and the possibilities will be endless. We cannot stop time from flying by or the changes that go along with this, but we can enjoy every minute we are given and make the most of it. So please, I charge you, take these three words - expect, explore, experience - make them your own, and apply them to your journey ahead. I wish you all the best, thank you for this opportunity.
