Two Steinway pianos donated by 1931 alumna
Tuesday, August 04, 2009

CANTON – Culver-Stockton College received two Steinway pianos this weekend from the estate of C-SC alumna Dr. Rita J. Hutcherson, who died in Boca Raton, Fla., at the age of 100 last December.

The two Steinway grand pianos were built in 1932 and 1963. In addition to donating the pianos, Hutcherson made arrangements for them to be safely relocated to the C-SC campus and named Culver-Stockton as one of four charities that will divide the residual of her estate. The pianos are now housed in the C-SC Performing Arts Center where they will be available to faculty and students.

Hutcherson was born as Rita Johnson and was a graduate of Maywood High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree in music at Culver-Stockton in 1931. She continued studying music and teaching piano well into her 90s. She turned 100 on Feb. 24, 2008, and passed away on Dec. 10, 2008.

“Mrs. Hutcherson graduated from Culver-Stockton more than 75 years ago, and we are extremely touched that she remembered her college so fondly and so generously,” said Richard D. Valentine, president of Culver-Stockton. “These pianos are excellent instruments. They are a wonderful gift to the college and will be greatly appreciated by our students and faculty as well as by the audiences who attend C-SC performances.”

Robert Keller, vice president for advancement, noted that many C-SC alumni include the college in their estate planning. “Planned giving is an essential support for Culver-Stockton College,” he added. “In this way, many alumni are able to set aside a meaningful gift to the college that helps us sustain our educational programs and our funding of opportunities for today’s students.”

Information about planned giving is available on the C-SC website at www.culver.edu/giving/estate_planning.asp.
