C-SC climbs six notches in U.S. News rankings
Thursday, August 20, 2009

CANTON, Mo. -- Culver-Stockton College has moved up again, tying for 30th in the list of Best Baccalaureate Colleges in the Midwest in the 2010 edition of “America’s Best Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report. C-SC has been ranked on the list of top Midwest baccalaureate colleges for four consecutive years and has moved up 18 positions in the past three years.

The rankings will be published in the magazine’s September 2009 issue, which is available on newsstands Monday, August 24. The annual rankings, based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, provide a resource for parents and students in the college search. The online issue of the magazine and a detailed explanation of the ranking methodology are available at www.usnews.com/colleges.

“We are exceptionally pleased that Culver-Stockton continues to climb in these rankings, and we believe that we will climb even higher as word spreads about our innovative academic curriculum, EXP@CSC, and its overwhelmingly positive impact on students and faculty alike,” said Richard Valentine, C-SC president. “Although the rankings are certainly not the only measurement of educational quality, they reaffirm our own confidence in the excellence of Culver-Stockton and are a valuable resource for prospective students and their families during the college search process.”

The small class sizes and low student-to-faculty ratios that are important to the academic experience at Culver-Stockton show especially well in the rankings, Valentine said, noting that 70 percent of Culver-Stockton’s classes have fewer than 20 students, with an average student-to-faculty ratio of 14:1.

“Small class sizes and low student/faculty ratios translate into greater individualized attention for students, which is a hallmark of small, private colleges like ours,” added R. Joseph Dieker, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. “Culver-Stockton is committed to continually enhancing our academic program to help ensure that all students are successful, both during their college years as well as in their chosen careers.”
