CANTON, Mo. –Culver-Stockton College has reported its first case of H1N1 on campus, which may also be the first confirmed case of the flu virus in Lewis County.

Dean of Student Life Wendy Powers said the student exhibited flu-like symptoms last week and removed herself from campus to her nearby home. Although initially reported as seasonal flu, additional testing concluded the student has the H1N1 virus.

“We have properly notified all authorities, as well as our college community,” Powers said. “The student has been off campus for nearly a week, and is recovering well.”

In accordance with its flu prevention plans, the college is providing extra cleaning of high-touch areas campus-wide in addition to the intensified efforts campus-wide to prevent the spread of any infectious disease.

Wall-mounted hand sanitizers have been placed in every campus building and disposable hand sanitizer bottles are available in public areas such as the dining hall, library, and classrooms. Chlorine bleach wipes are available in computer labs and other high-touch areas. In addition, staff has been trained in enhanced cleaning methods and in how to recognize and report flu symptoms.
