Fall 2009 offers many experiential opportunities to C-SC students
Friday, October 30, 2009
CANTON, Mo. – Culver-Stockton College’s Fall 2009 three-week session, which starts November 30, is highly anticipated as students prepare to indulge in experiential courses which will challenge them to think outside the box and get some hands-on learning.
The three-week session is a part of the recently adopted curriculum, EXP@CSC. This curriculum splits the traditional 15-week term into a 12-week long term and a 3-week short term. During the 12-week term most students take three or four classes; and during the three-week short term most students take only one course where they are able to fully focus their attention on a single topic. Three-week classes include study abroad courses, experiential courses, research, and internships, as well as on-campus courses.
Lecturer in religion and C-SC Chaplain, Brent Reynolds, will be teaching “Religion in America,” a required course for most students but which has a slightly different twist in the three-week term. Through literature, film, and travel experience, the class addresses religion, beliefs, whether America is a religious country, pluralism, and the role of religion in American public life, including the role of government, church and state relations, and politics. The class includes a two-day trip to St. Louis, Mo., during which students will visit an Islamic Center, a synagogue, a Hare Krishna temple, and the Cathedral Basilica.
Also traveling to the St. Louis area is the “Global Business” class taught by lecturer in business, Susan Deege. The class will visit Anderson, Hall, and Marsh (AHM) Financial Group in St. Louis, which includes a meeting with C-SC alum, Steve Hall, AHM’s managing partner. The class also will travel to Keokuk, Iowa, to visit Roquette, a French-based company, and to Moline, Ill., to visit John Deere’s headquarters. Students will hear from a representative of Gardner-Denver (Quincy, Ill.), which supplies compressed air and other industrial equipment to manufacturers around the world.
Professor of business Dell Ann Janney will be taking the “Corporate Experience” class to Chicago to gain exposure to corporate negotiations at Sonnenschein, Nath, and Rosenthal law firm, middle market commercial banking at The Private Bank, and accounting analysis at a CPA firm. In addition, a team competition for “The Chicago Apprentice” will allow students to demonstrate their marketing intellect. This course also will provide students the opportunity to learn first-hand about the impact of the current economic situation from business executives, to hear the work experiences from recent hires and interns, and understand how to navigate the hiring process from human resource managers.
This year’s “Directing” class, under the supervision of Haidee Heaton, professor of theatre, will direct a 15- to 20-minute one-act play during the three-week session. Students will have regular class in the morning to learn about music, sound, movement, stage pictures, the history and evolution of directing, and what other directors have to say. In the afternoons and evenings, rehearsals will be held for individual one-acts. Students will put into practice what they learn in class and will be able to direct a show with their own vision of storytelling and see it realized as a full production. The one-acts will be performed Saturday, December 12, Monday, December 14, and Tuesday, December 15.
These are just a few examples of what will be going on both on and off the Hill between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. Other classes offered include “Dueling and European Culture of Honor,” “Poetry Workshop,” “Current Issues in Criminal Justice,” “Web Programming,” “Abnormal Psychology,” and a wide range of physical education classes, along with many other courses in every field.
The EXP@CSC curriculum offers students greater flexibility, provides hands-on experience in every field, and better prepares students for emerging careers. For more information on the curriculum and three-week course offerings, visit www.culver.edu/exp.
