CANTON, Mo. – Culver-Stockton College inducted 12 students into the Pi Lambda Theta international honor society and professional association in education recently.

Students gathered with their families, faculty and staff at a reception held to honor the inductees. Terry Sherer, associate professor of education and division chair of Education and Applied Arts, and Richard Valentine, C-SC president, both spoke to the students about the importance of being an educator. Students also heard from keynote speaker, W.T. Johnson, a 1973 graduate of C-SC, who was inducted into the C-SC Education Hall of Excellence at this year’s Homecoming events. Johnson is currently the vice principal at Veterans Elementary School in Hannibal, Mo. During his speech, Johnson challenged the inductees to learn from their future students and to never be afraid to ask a question. Johnson ended his speech by reading “The Bracelet,” by Miriam D. Rosier, and encouraged the students to strive to be like the teacher in the story, who never gave up on her student.

The inductees include Jessica Bunch, senior special education major from Quincy, Ill.; Travis Dahlhauser, junior speech education major from Rockford, Ill.; Jessica Davis, junior math major from New London, Mo.; Whitney Gibler, junior English education major from Foley, Mo.; Karrie Guthrie, senior criminal justice major from Independence, Mo.; Brent Holtrop, junior English education major from Frisco, Texas; Rebecca Keith, junior elementary education major from Ewing, Mo.; Rebekah Mathieson, junior art education major from St. Louis, Mo.; Erin McAvoy, junior English education major from Blufton, Ind.; Ashley Mohrman, senior early childhood education major from Canton, Mo.; Ellie Shoemyer, junior English education major from Monroe City, Mo.; and Lance Smith, junior history education major from Memphis, Mo.

Selection for Pi Lambda Theta is based on leadership and contributions to the college community, potential to exert leadership in the education profession, exemplary character and superb scholarship.
