Three Rhinoceros players presented with regional competition nominations
Tuesday, February 23, 2010

CANTON, Mo. – Three Culver-Stockton students were presented with invitations to participate in scholarship competitions at the Region V Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in January 2011 following their work in the C-SC production of Rhinoceros, directed by C-SC associate professor of theatre, Dr. Haidee Heaton.

The 1959 play is about the residents of a small French town who are all turning into rhinoceroses over the course of the show. Only one man, Berenger, a drinker, eludes the oddity. It is often read as a response to the increase of Communism, Fascism, and Nazism preceding the Second World War and includes themes of conformity, culture, philosophy, and morality.

Danielle Hauer, junior arts management major from Troy, Mo., and Zach Martin, senior arts management major from Decatur, Ill., have been nominated for their performances as Daisy and Jean, respectively, to participate in the Irene Ryan Scholarship Auditions. Daisy, Berenger’s love interest, is one of the last to conform with the town’s citizens decision to become rhinoceroses; Jean, Berenger’s best friend, is one of the first.

Whitney Colston, junior musical theatre major from Neosho, Mo., has been invited to participate in the Regional Design Expo with her costume designs for the production.

The 43rd annual KCACTF Region V Festival will be hosted by Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa during the week of January 16-22, 2011 where all competitions and expositions will take place.
