More than 80 C-SC alumni, faculty, staff and community members took part in the event. Those in attendance helped landscape the courtyard behind Weldon Residence Hall, painted the weight room in Charles Field House, landscaped near Johann Memorial Library and completed other small, individual projects. This is second year Culver-Stockton has held the work day and each year participation grows, with alumni traveling from hours away to take part. Ted Wolf, a 1978 graduate of C-SC, traveled 140 miles to take part in the work day. He says it was the opportunity to interact with the college that inspired him to help. “I just like being on campus, seeing the people who are there, it’s a nice feeling,” said Wolf, Chatham, Ill. This was the first year Debbie Gillam ’76, and her daughter Jules, who will be a sophomore at C-SC, have taken part in the work day, but they look forward to participating in future work days. “We both enjoy volunteering our time and wanted to help ensure that the campus looked its best for the incoming freshmen,” said Debbie Gillam, Media, Ill. In addition to helping prepare the campus for the return of students, the Alumni and Friends Work Day also provided those who participated with the opportunity to connect with each other, and the school. “This day was filled with hard work, building of lasting friendships, and an amazing commitment to bettering this fine, old college, as we prepare with much enthusiasm for the arrival of new and returning students to the Hill,” said C-SC President Richard Valentine. Following the work day volunteers were invited to attend an appreciation barbecue hosted by the president and his wife, Lorna. C-SC will host another Alumni and Friends Work Day prior to commencement ceremonies for the 2010-2011 academic year.
