C-SC to host Duel on the Hill
Friday, October 15, 2010
CANTON, Mo. - Culver-Stockton College’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Chapter will host the 3rd Annual Duel on the Hill Case Study Competition on Oct. 21, 2010. Duel on the Hill is an annual case study competition written and coordinated by Culver-Stockton SIFE students. It assists high school students in the development of marketing, economic, team-building, presentation and personal finance skills.
Teams of four to six high school students were given an identical case study on Oct. 1, 2010. The case study involves the needs of each team’s locality, and takes into consideration the environmental and financial fitness of the respective communities. The students now have three weeks to solve the problem with a creative, reasonable, workable solution, based on the economics, resources, location, and potential and future aims for their locales. During the Oct. 21st event, students will present their plan to a panel of judges. Each group will be judged on its analysis of the problem, understanding of the issue, creativity and innovation, feasibility of the proposed solution, thoroughness and clarity. The top three teams receive trophies.
Teams from: Canton High School, Southeastern (2 teams), Warsaw (3 teams), Highland, Illini West, Central High School and Heartland High School will compete in the event.
“Through this competition, students are able to take what they have learned in their business classes and apply it to a real-life scenario. The practical knowledge and skills these students gain will be immensely valuable for them now and in the future,” said Abi Adeleye, Duel on the Hill Coordinator.
The 3rd Annual Duel on the Hill will continue the Harvest Fest Challenge tradition. Fall Harvest, sponsored by WGEM and County Market, is an initiative focused toward feeding the hungry within the tri-state area. All items go directly toward local Salvation Army locations to meet the daily needs of those less fortunate. The team which raises the largest amount of food items will be presented a trophy. The 2009 Duel on the Hill Fall Harvest Fest Challenge winner was Warsaw High School. For more information on Fall Harvest, visit www.wgem.com.
SIFE advisor Jeanne Johnson, assistant professor of MIS, states: “Duel on the Hill provides C-SC students as well as high school students competing in this event the opportunity to learn through experience, exactly what Culver-Stockton’s EXP@C-SC program encompasses.”
While on campus, students will have the opportunity to tour C-SC, speak with a student panel, and learn more about the C-SC Business Programs. The keynote speaker for the event is Jim Barnett, C-SC alum, and CEO of Lanmarx, IL.
Judges for the event include corporate recruiters from Dot Foods, Inc., and executives from General Mills, Lanmarx and other local businesses, as well as C-SC faculty and SIFE students.
The event is coordinated by the Culver-Stockton SIFE Chapter. For more information and photos from the 1st and 2nd Duel on the Hills at see the Duel web site at www.duelonthehill.webs.com.
