Janney named Culver-Stockton College associate dean of experiential education
Wednesday, October 12, 2011

CANTON, Mo. – In an effort to further Culver-Stockton College’s commitment to experiential education, college officials are excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Dell Ann Janney, C-SC professor of accounting and chair of the Business Division, to the position of associate dean of experiential education.

This newly created position was developed to work in conjunction with Culver-Stockton’s unique experience-based curriculum and 12/3 academic calendar, which divides the 15-week semester into a 12-week and a 3-week term. This approach to academics allows students pursue several courses in the 12-week portion of the semester. Then in the 3-week term, most students focus primarily on one course. During the 3-week term students immerse themselves in a subject of extreme interest, conduct research, take part in an internship or study abroad for coursework. “Our unique 12/3 calendar allows faculty the opportunity to be creative both inside and outside of the classroom,” explains Janney. “One of my favorite courses that I teach is ‘Corporate Experience’, in which my students research corporations and travel to meet with executives in corporate boardrooms. For example, at our visit to Heatron Inc., for ‘Corporate Experience Kansas City,’ students were able to learn about a new product and develop ideas for marketing slogans. Another course that I taught was ‘European Capitals’ study abroad, and my students travelled to London, Paris and Rome to study business cultures and customs. Students described this study abroad as a ‘life-changing experience,’” Janney added.

“We are on the threshold of major advances in our commitment to experiential education here at C-SC,” commented Culver-Stockton College Dean David Wilson. “Dell Ann’s leadership will be key in making those advances a reality,” he continued. Janney says in her new role, she hopes to serve as a resource for her fellow faculty members, as well as staff and students. “In my role as associate dean of experiential education, I will assist faculty and staff in developing experiential-based programs as well as provide primary leadership to ensure that we follow best practices in experiential education,” explains Janney. “Using the world as our classroom allows students to truly engage in their education in order to better prepare them for their careers and graduate school. This benefit is reflected in our 96.8% placement rate,” she continued.

Janney’s appointment to the position of associate dean of experiential education is effective January 1, 2012.
