Friday, October 14, 2011
CANTON, Mo. – Members of Culver-Stockton College’s Jazz Ensemble and Chamber Choir will perform during two separate concert events on Oct. 28 and 29.
On Friday, Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. the Culver-Stockton College Jazz Ensemble will present a concert entitled "Heroes and Villains" at the beautifully restored Lewis Street Playhouse in Canton, Mo. Featured selections will include the theme from the movie "The Incredibles" by Michael Giacchino, "Filthy McNasty” by Horace Silver, "Mack the Knife" by Kurt Weill, and "Superbone Meets the Badman" by Jay Chattaway. The Jazz Ensemble is directed by Professor of Music Dr. Thomas Polett.
At 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, the music department will present an afternoon of chamber music. This concert, taking place in the Merillat Chapel in the Robert W. Brown Performing Arts Center, will feature several chamber instrumental ensembles in addition to the Chamber Choir. The Culver-Stockton College Chamber Choir, under the direction of the new Director of Choral Activities Dr. Elliot Jones, will present works from different centuries juxtaposed side-by-side, such as William Byrd’s haunting Ave verum corpus, composed in the 16th century, paired with Steven Stucky’s Whispers, written just nine years ago. Whispers combines a text by Walt Whitman with a musical theme from Byrd’s motet.
