C-SC Wind Ensemble, Keokuk High School performers share the stage
Monday, January 30, 2012
CANTON, Mo. – The Culver-Stockton College Wind Ensemble, directed by Trent A. Hollinger, C-SC assistant professor of music and director of bands, will perform a joint concert with the Keokuk High School Concert Band on Sunday, Feb. 12 beginning at 3 p.m. in the Alexander Campbell Auditorium, located in the Robert W. Brown Performing Arts Center on the C-SC Campus.
The guest wind ensemble concert honors outstanding regional band programs. This year the concert will open with the Keokuk High School Concert Band, under the direction of Josh Hetzel, will be performing Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral by Richard Wagner and Arabian Dances by Brian Balmages. Members of the Culver-Stockton Wind Ensemble will join Keokuk High School to perform Claude T. Smith’s God of Our Fathers under Hollinger’s direction.
Following a brief intermission, the C-SC Wind Ensemble will perform three standards of the wind ensemble repertoire. The opening work is Charles Ives’s quirky and silly March: Omega Lambda Chi, composed as a theme song to a fictitious Yale fraternity. The second work will be the iconic Gustav Holst Second Suite in F performed on near original instrumentation. The finale work of the concert will be Frank Ticheli’s 2008 composition Angels In the Architecture. This finale work was inspired by the duality of good and evil and explores themes of light and dark, including several special effects such as solo soprano voice, crystal glasses, extended techniques on various instruments, and several other austere elements.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information contact the C-SC Fine Arts Division at finearts@culver.edu or (573) 288-6413.
