Culver-Stockton College names new Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College
Friday, February 17, 2012

CANTON, Mo. – Culver-Stockton College announced today that, after a thorough and extensive nationwide search process, Dr. Daniel Silber has been named vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college.

“I am truly honored to be chosen as Culver-Stockton College’s next vice president for academic affairs and academic dean. This is an exciting opportunity to work with colleagues at an institution known for its strong commitment to student success and experiential learning,” commented Dr. Silber.

Dr. Silber comes to Culver-Stockton from Florida Southern College where he served as associate provost and professor of philosophy. During his 14 years with Florida Southern, Dr. Silber also served in a number of faculty and administrative leadership roles, including being named chair of the Transformational Curriculum Committee in 2007. The committee provided oversight for a curriculum transition that moved FSC from a three-credit-hour course system to a four-credit-hour-system, which was enacted in 2010. In addition, Dr. Silber helped revitalize FSC’s Honors Program, nearly doubling its enrollment and increasing student retention rates within the program to 90 percent. Dr. Silber also has extensive experience as an instructor and professor, teaching a number of courses focused on philosophy and ethics. “I truly believe Dr. Silber’s collaborative leadership style and academic experience are well-suited for our fine old institution,” commented Culver-Stockton College President Richard Valentine. “I speak for our entire campus community when I say that we look forward to welcoming Dr. Silber to our Culver-Stockton family.”

“I see Culver-Stockton as a college with an innovative curriculum that integrates the essentials of a liberal arts education with excellent options for service learning, study abroad, internships, and practical experience,” explains Silber. “I believe this integrated approach not only has great appeal but also empowers students to develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to flourish in a rapidly changing world. As the new VPAA and dean, I look forward to further developing C-SC’s academic programs and to helping the college shape its strategic vision in order to achieve further academic distinction,” he continued.

Dr. Silber received his doctorate and master’s degrees from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., in 1994 and 1993, respectively. In 1989, he graduated summa cum laude from George Washington University in Washington, DC with a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and history.

Dr. Silber’s position as Culver-Stockton’s vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college is effective June 1, 2012.
