To determine rank, numeric values were placed on the three categories and all of their subcategories. All 1762 schools listed in the U.S Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) were evaluated using the same scoring system, excluding the 145 schools where at least half of the undergraduate degrees awarded to students were not bachelor’s degree and the five federal military academies. The three broad categories were weighted equally and were broken down into smaller components. The score for social mobility was based on factors like the number of students receiving the Pell grant, ACT/SAT scores, predicted graduation rate and actual graduation rate. Net price was also a factor in this category. The factors that were considered in the research category were the number of dollars in millions going toward research, based on student population and the number of doctoral students. Finally, the service category considered things like the number of alumni who go into the Peace Corps, percentage of students who served in ROTC, percentage of funds of Federal Work Study money going toward community service, the number of students participating in community service and the hours they spend. All schools were assigned numerical rankings for each sub-category and the final decision was made by totaling all points. “We are very excited to receive such a high ranking from Washington Monthly,” says Dr. Dan Silber, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. “Culver-Stockton is, and will continue to be, an outstanding school because of the real-world educational opportunities our students receive. The student experience at Culver-Stockton really can be counted as one of the best in the nation. These rankings speak to how Culver-Stockton’s commitment to experiential learning really does provide a high value education to our students.” Washington Monthly’s goal in ranking the colleges was to provide consumers with information about what colleges were doing for the country. The baccalaureate category means that the majority of students at a school are working toward their bachelor’s degree. OTHER FEATURED ARTICLES
