Betrayal and deceit always seem to bring out the best in people, especially when it comes between them and what they want, as you will see in Culver-Stockton College’s annual Opera Workshop performance of “The Old Maid and the Thief.”
The workshop performance will be held at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 20, and Saturday, Feb. 21, in Merillat Recital Hall, located in Robert W. Brown Performing Arts Center on campus in Canton, Mo. The event is free and open to the public.

“The Old Maid and the Thief,” written by Gian-Carlo Menotti, takes place during the early 1950s. The play involves two spinsters and a maid who reminisce about love affairs, wondering if they are real or not. Not wanting to live out the rest of their days lonely and unfulfilled, they take in a man who is a wandering idealist, hoping to fulfill their need of happiness. As the three women do everything in their power and use every little bit that they have in their pockets to keep Bob happy, one woman decides to take matters into her own hands and make the innocent look guilty. With betrayal and dishonesty right at her fingertips, she’ll do anything she can to get what she wants, only to have it all come back staring her in the face in the end.

Cast members include sophomore Adrienne Castiglia of Louisiana, Mo., as Miss Todd; freshman Tabor Porter of Independence, Kan., as Miss Pinkerton; sophomore Bronwyn Siemek of Florissant, Mo., as Laetitia; senior Jarrod Hendricks
of Garrison, Iowa, as Sam Waters; sophomore Tommy Carter of Kansas City, Mo., as Bob; and senior Clinton Dorsey of Holt, Mo., as Charlie Witherspoon.

Opera Workshop, directed by Carol Mathieson, professor of music, is a course offered each spring semester in which singers, selected by audition, spend six weeks learning dramatic style and harmonic idiom. The opera workshop is a part of the college’s Academic and Cultural Events Program. For more information, contact Mathieson at (217) 231-6435 (if calling from outside Canton), 288-6435 (if calling from Canton) or e-mail cmathieson@culver.edu.
