Culver-Stockton College is ranked as one of the Best Baccalaureate Colleges in the Midwest, according to U.S. News & World Report in its "America's Best Colleges 2008" issue, which is available at bookstores, newsstands and Amazon.com.

CANTON, Mo. – Culver-Stockton College earned the 37th spot in the top 50 of Best Baccalaureate Colleges in the Midwest in the 2008 edition of "America’s Best Colleges" by U.S. News & World Report. This is an 11-position jump in the rankings for Culver-Stockton College since the 2007 list was released.

The exclusive rankings – which this year feature some substantial changes in methodology – will be published in the magazine’s August 27 issue, on newsstands Monday, August 20, and is available online at www.usnews.com/colleges.

Most notable among the improved rankings of Culver-Stockton in the newly released list, according to College President William L. Fox, are improvements in the peer assessment score and the percentage of classes under 20 students.

"These numbers are clear indicators of our strengths," he added. "When more of our peers rank us highly it shows that our college’s reputation is growing. When we have a better percentage of classes with less than 20 students – a higher percentage than 16 other peer colleges ranked in the top 35 in our region – it is evidence of our commitment to providing a superb education to students of promise."

"Best Baccalaureate Colleges" is a new category in 2008 for the U.S. News & World Report Rankings. It replaces the former category of "Midwestern Comprehensive Colleges," where Culver-Stockton has traditionally been ranked – most recently among the top 50 in the region.

"About a dozen measures and variables are used to rank institutions of higher learning across the country, and we are very honored to move up so far in the ranking of colleges for our region," Fox said. "This designation indicates the growing realization that our college is succeeding measurably in achieving our mission with each student. It confirms what the students, faculty and staff at Culver-Stockton College already know to be true: That we are one of the best colleges in mid-America, offering a high-quality undergraduate experience with strong values and the and added joy of belonging to the college’s active learning community."

The annual rankings – in which U.S. News aligns colleges based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching – provides a resource for parents and students in the important search for the best fit in a college choice. A complete explanation of the magazine’s ranking methodology is available at www.usnews.com/colleges.

"We understand that students and their families invest significant resources in their college choice, and they need to have confidence in their choice," said Melik Peter Khoury, Culver-Stockton vice president of enrollment management and college marketing. "The U.S. News ranking is one of many measurement that will help ensure that parents know that Culver-Stockton is a worthwhile investment in their student’s future."

Culver-Stockton College participates in several national surveys to compare itself to peer institutions, according to Fox. "These results affirm our confidence that we produce outstanding graduates, who also report that they believe they receive excellent preparation here for their chosen careers."
