Digging up C-SC's past
 Carla Steinbeck, C-SC archivist
When Carla Steinbeck describes her job, two words come to mind "preserving history." Steinbeck is the archivist at Culver-Stockton. The college archives are located on the first floor of Johann and contain four rooms filled with the rich history of Culver-Stockton.
According to Steinbeck, there are records of past employees, sports, fine arts, photos, and publications through the years. She assembles all the photos and publications in a way that they won't degrade.
There are letters from the founders of Christian University, the original name of Culver-Stockton. Steinbeck has run across a few intriguing connections to American history over the two-and-a-half years she has been with the college. "I found a newspaper from when Abraham Lincoln was shot in 1865," Steinbeck said.
Culver-Stockton was the first site to host a pencil collector's convention and houses a large pencil collection of nearly 8,000 writing implements in Johann, which was donated by Aubrey Allen's wife after his death. Allen joined the college faculty in 1927 as instructor of psychology and director of public relations. He also served as alumni director and assistant to the president, assistant professor of journalism, and associate professor of business
administration and economics.
Steinbeck's goals over the next year are to add links to the library's page on the C-SC website that will allow students and faculty to put a "hold" on an archive selection and make an appointment to come by and do research. "I want to make these materials accessible to students and faculty," said Steinbeck.
"I wanted to work in a museum, which would allow me to use my skills in organization and art; and this position allows me to use both," added Steinbeck.
