Student success from the expert

Wendy Powers has only been at Culver-Stockton for two months and has already began to make improvements. Powers is responsible for the new furniture that has helped create a more laid-back ambiance at the Gladys Crown Student Center.

"I wanted the area to be a place where students can hang out," said Powers.

Powers, C-SC's associate dean for student success and first-year programming, is responsible for ensuring that students are on the right path while at Culver-Stockton. Powers' position allows for her to be objective and to look at projects and programs going on around campus and how Culver-Stockton can work together as a more holistic institution to retain students.

"I am taking a look at residential student activities, paying school bills, academic advising, and forming a first-year experience program next fall," she explains. Her goals for the next two years are reducing the number of students who want to leave and increasing their persistence at C-SC. In short term, she wants to familiarize herself with the structure, the people, and the system at Culver-Stockton.

"As one person, we cannot change retention, but we can help everyone rethink how we do things. We can bring together everyone that is involved and improve upon those areas that need to be changed," she added.

For questions, contact Wendy Powers at x6322 or stop in and see her in room 208 in the Gladys Crown Student Center.

Professor Bob Mathieson Dies September 11

Bob Mathieson, professor emeritus of physics and computer information science, died Tuesday, September 11, following a courageous battle with cancer. He served the college as a member of Culver-Stockton's faculty from 1963-2004. Visitation will be at Davis Funeral Home Thursday, Sept. 13, after 4:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be on Friday, September 14, at 11:00 a.m. in Merillat Chapel, with burial in Forest Grove Cemetery to follow. Thursday is an official class day; but faculty, staff and students may attend the service.

In the Summer 2005 issue of the Chronicle, Mathieson wrote in his faculty profile about the changes he had seen at Culver-Stockton in 42 years on campus as well as some of the consistencies: "I have seen a constant and genuine institutional concern for the educational and ethical success of the students. I found that when I arrived, and I see it as I leave," he wrote. His memories of cats and coal, climbing the water tower, secret telephone cables, and more are available by clicking here. You can share your memories of Dr. Mathieson online at www.culver.edu/mathieson/. Memorials can be made to Culver-Stockton College, Quincy Unitarian Church, Quincy Museum, or the American Cancer Society/Lewis County Relay for Life.
