New outlook on student activities
Brent Hickenbottom, new director of Greek life and student activities at Culver-Stockton, has been on campus two months and created several new events for the school year. He has even created games for Wildcat events (see left).
He is also working to increase numbers in Greek life and has plans for developing a Greek renaissance program. Hickenbottom is in charge of all student activities, campus programming council, entertainment, welcome weekend, and the student portion of Homecoming. He also will launch "residence hall week."
"I am working on an overhaul of campus programming council to find out what students want on campus," Hickenbottom added.
He hopes to improve the overall school spirit within Culver-Stockton and is working on increasing attendance at the athletic events and booking more professional entertainment.
"At the end of my time here, I want to see an overall change in student programming and school spirit. I want Culver-Stockton to be a place where students want to be. I want prospective students to see it is an active and energized facility with events always going on," he added.
Cooperating Teacher Orientation
Culver-Stockton College hosted an orientation recently for students who will be doing their student teaching in area schools this fall as well as for area teachers who will be supervising the students.
Ann Hammer, director of teacher education, said the "Cooperating Teacher Orientation" builds rapport between the groups and helps establish mutual expectations for the student teaching experience.
"The success of Culver-Stockton's teacher preparation program is dependent not only on the efforts of our faculty and staff, but also on the contributions of the cooperating teachers in the schools," said Hammer.
Student teaching begins October 1 for Culver-Stockton.
A Culver-Stockton College hoodie was given away as a door prize at the orientation, which was won by Susan Powell, kindergarten teacher at Marion County R-II.
Culver-Stockton wins blood bowl
For the second year in a row, Culver-Stockton comes away with the trophy from the Great River Blood Bowl Drive. Culver-Stockton had 8 percent of its student body donate blood, while Quincy University had only 4 percent. There were 30 people who were first-time donors at last week's drive. The Red Cross said it was very pleased with the friendly and courteous student body and the campus preparations.
Congratulations to all who participated as a volunteer worker or donor. Special thanks to the members of Tri-Beta, student nurses, and athletic training majors who volunteered and helped make the drive a success. Without your support, the needs of area patients could not be met.
The trophy can be found in the display case on the second floor of the Science Center. "Next year, the trifecta," said Mike Jones, professor of biology.
Hanging violence out to dry
The Health Outreach Peer Educators (HOPE) is sponsoring the first "Dirty Laundry Project," inspired by the "Clothesline Project," in order to raise campus awareness of violence.
Stories of violence that affected you personally, or affected a friend or family member will be told on t-shirts with pictures, words, or both. The shirts will be displayed across a clothesline the week of September 23-29 in the upstairs hallway of the Gladys Crown Center.
There are 50 t-shirts available for you to tell your story in the Peer Office, Johnson 116 now until September 26 or until the shirts are gone. Completed shirts can be left in the Peer Office for HOPE to display. Markers and refreshments will be available. For questions or comments, contact Molly Glawe at mglawe@culver.edu or x7606.
