Business-Ethics Week at Culver-Stockton College
The second annual "Business-Ethics Week" at Culver-Stockton will be October 1-5. "As a part of our ongoing commitment to prepare students for life's inevitable ethical dilemmas, Culver-Stockton College has planned an annual program devoted to business ethics," according to Dell Ann Janney, chair of the Business Division. Students are invited to attend the Business Leadership Exchange featuring Quincy Mayor John Spring, who deals with concepts of business ethics frequently in local
government affairs. "Although our faculty integrate business ethics content into the curriculum throughout the year, next week provides an opportunity to emphasize ethical issues in every business course and allows students to recognize the myriad of ethical situations that will be encountered in the workplace," Janney added. "To conclude the week, Mayor Spring will be the keynote speaker as a part of the Business Leadership Exchange."
Faculty from the business division have other activities planned throughout the week to reinforce the concept of ethics.
Ethics week includes:
-
Determine how to handle tax evasion or tax avoidance given the AICPA's Statements on Standards for Tax Services
-
Discuss a video depicting unethical practices by Arthur Anderson relating to Enron and Waste Management
-
Discussing the issue surrounding the ethical practice of certain companys' (beer, cigarettes, cigars) marketing
-
Software piracy and hacking
-
Students will participate in an interactive program to identify participants in recent corporate scandals
-
Ethical matters pertaining to the use of the World Wide Web and technology
-
The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) members will review the ACM Code of Ethics
-
Analyze the Code of Business Conduct and the Social Responsibility Report of Gap, Inc. given that the company is producing goods overseas in less than ideal conditions
-
Review the ethical dilemma of teams using performance enhancing drugs to better their product (the player) performance.
-
Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) members and Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) members will prepare an ethics display in the Herrick Foundation Center outlining the various approaches to ethical analysis
