Renowned poet, author to be speakers at C-SC

|
Guest appearances by poet Douglas Goetsch and best-selling novelist Jacquelyn Mitchard will be highlights of the academic year for the Culver-Stockton College English Department, which is launching a minor in creative writing. "This new academic program will give our students an opportunity to experiment in the various genres of poetry, fiction, and drama," said Ron Stormer, Ph.D., associate professor of English and chair of the English department. "Culver-Stockton students will be able to develop a portfolio that will help them become published writers." Goetsch, poet-in-residence at the University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond, will conduct a poetry reading at 7:30 p.m. Monday, December 8, in the Merillat Recital Hall on the C-SC campus. He will also participate in a morning workshop for C-SC students. Author Jacquelyn Mitchard will be the keynote speaker at Culver-Stockton's annual Young Writers' Conference for high school students this spring and will deliver C-SC's Kraus Lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2009, in Merillat Recital Hall. Both the poetry reading by Goetsch on December 8 and the Kraus Lecture by Mitchard on March 25 are free and open to the public. Read full story online.
Five C-SC students to stage one-act plays in December
From Thanksgiving break until Christmas break, five Culver-Stockton College theatre students will be directing one-act plays to be performed December 13, 15, and 16. The students are enrolled in a three-week experiential course within the EXP@CSC curriculum. Under the supervision of Haidee Heaton, C-SC associate professor of theatre, the undergraduate students will have the opportunity to experience directing, which will assist them in future theatrical endeavors. The student directors are Nicole Herrington, senior history and theatre major from Quincy, Ill.; Alison Schmidt, senior English major from Alton, Ill.; Nick Relic, sophomore theatre major from Kansas City, Mo.; Breanne Taylor, senior arts management and theatre major from Barnhart, Mo.; and Megan Christy, senior communications major from Vinton, Iowa. Between the five new directors, there are three days of surefire entertainment in mid-December. The performances will be divided into two groups, and each play will be performed twice. The one-acts are scheduled December 13 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and December 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. For more information, contact Haidee Heaton at hheaton@culver.edu or 573-288-6434.
