Scott Giltner, assistant professor of history,
presents lecture at symposium.

The Dred Scott Supreme Court case was the topic for the presentation by Scott Giltner, assistant professor of history, during the recent Lincoln-Douglas Debate Symposium. He presented with Joe Messina from Quincy University during the symposium at John Wood Community College.

The event was presented by the Quincy Lincoln Bicentennial Commission to mark the 150th anniversary of the 6th Lincoln-Douglas Debate, which was held in Quincy on October 13, 1858.

"The day was filled with presentations on different topics regarding the history behind the debate," said Giltner. "I spoke about why there was controversy around the Dred Scott court case and why this issue is important to understand."

There were four different sessions during the symposium, including: "The Impending Crisis: Background to the Lincoln-Douglas Debates;" "Slavery: Where the Lincoln-Douglas Debates Fit into the Broad Perspective of Ante-bellum History;" "The Turning Point: The 6th Debate;" and "Interrelating History in Words, Sounds, and Images: Applications."

"I was really happy to be a part of the event and was able to bring knowledge as to why the Lincoln-Douglas debate occurred," added Giltner.

Students to pick logo for new EXP@CSC curriculum

C-SC students are invited to vote Thursday, February 21, to select one of three logos for the new EXP@CSC curriculum. Voting will take place in the Gladys Crown Center during lunch from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. outside both the Dining Hall and Cat's Pause. Treats will be available; and balloting will enter students in a drawing for door prizes. Ballots also can be cast upstairs during dinner.

"The final three choices are based on a logo design selected by a student focus group," said William L. Fox, president. "We want this logo to represent the students' thoughts about the new curriculum, which combines C-SC tradition with innovation."

The students' choice will be revealed by President Fox on Thursday, February 28, at 11:45 a.m. in the Dining Hall.

"Students are encouraged to attend and join us for music and prizes and to view their selection," Fox said.

Continuing the "Pie Day" tradition

"Pie Day" is an old "R and R" tradition from the early 1970s that allowed C-SC faculty and staff time to unwind.  "R and R" events were held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Fridays and were typically informal, with cookies and coffee.

"'Pie Day' and 'High Tea' were put on by the Dames Club, a group of faculty wives and women faculty members who met monthly to discuss ways to enhance the social fabric of the community; as well as enjoy each other's company," said Carol Mathieson, professor of music. "The Dames Club lasted until the mid '80s due to women entering the workforce."

Usually "Pie Day" is scheduled around George Washington's birthday; this year it's on February 22, his actual birthday. The event is built around one of the legends surrounding George Washington chopping down a cherry tree and the tradition of baking cherry pie to mark his birthday.

"Faculty and staff informally kept track of how many pieces of pie each guest ate, and the grand meister pie champion through the years was George Lee, professor emeritus of history, with seven pieces," added Mathieson. "Others tried to break his record, but the slices were smaller later on; and their challenges were denied."

"R and R occurred quarterly over the years, but there was a struggle to keep it going," said Sharon Upchurch, librarian and assistant professor of library science. "The Dame's Club used polished silver and elegant china for these events."

But the "Pie Day" tradition has continued over the years. "Pie Day" has been hosted by different C-SC departments; this year it will be held by the Johann Memorial Library staff from 3-4:30 p.m.
