The renovated Lewis Street Playhouse will open this weekend bringing a historical ambiance and modern entertainment to a new crowd of students. The theatre, which will feature recent film releases, seats 141 people and the space will be available to rent for community and educational events. Show times are Thursdays and Fridays, 6:30 and 9:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, 4 and 7 p.m. Ticket prices are $3 for early shows; $5, late shows; and $3 for College Night (college ID
required).
There will be a student sneak preview screening on Friday, February 29, for Culver-Stockton and Canton R-V students to see "National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets" at 9:30 p.m.
On Saturday, March 1, the early show will be "ET" followed by "National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets."
The theatre selects movies based on input from school-aged children and various committees in the area. The early shows focus on children's programming, and the later shows are for adults to enjoy. The theatre shows recently released films as well as old favorites.
"Community involvement is a key factor in the collaboration of selecting the movies," said Erin Wessely, general manager of the Lewis Street Playhouse and assistant coach for Culver-Stockton track and field teams.
"The idea for the theatre originated with a group of students in the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA)," said Dell Ann Janney, chair of the Business Division. "During the past four years, several classes have contributed to the research and analysis required for establishing and operating the theatre. Many students have participated on the organizing committee, including Stacey Bregenzer, senior accounting and arts management major, who serves as an intern with the Lewis Street
Playhouse.
Culver-Stockton's business students presented a business plan last fall that the Lewis Street Playhouse is using to help focus on advertising and marketing.
"I am really excited to be in this position and able to collaborate with a wide variety of community members about the theatre," said Wessely.
The formal grand opening of the theatre will be Sunday, April 20, during "Canton in Bloom" weekend.
The theatre is housed in the former Miller-Starr Opera House, built in 1893. It has been a vaudeville theatre and former movie house as well. Several C-SC staff and faculty have played major roles in renovating the building.
