CANTON, Mo. — Carly Harper ’20 of Foristell, Mo., is the recipient of the Doty Family Award in Education, a $500 cash award.

The award was established by Logan M. Doty ’19 in recognition of his parents for their dedication to help him meet his educational goals and meeting the needs of the readiness of his first classroom. This tribute to the teaching profession and the needs of first-year teachers and their classroom preparation will allow a graduating senior to have much-needed funding for their classroom setup and supplies.

The recipient is chosen annually by the members of the education faculty at Culver-Stockton College.

Harper will be teaching English at Duchesne High School in St. Charles, Mo., and also will be a junior varsity coach with the girls basketball program.

“I want a nice reading center for (my students),” Harper said in her application. “I want big bookcases, young adult novels that contain many different genres, different reading chairs and a rug. Students are so used to walking into a classroom with just white walls, desks lined up in rows and a board in the front. I want to be the opposite. I want my students to talk into a fun and colorful classroom where they can have fun and learn more about literature.”

She was a four-year member of the women’s basketball team at Culver-Stockton. She also was the recipient of the Dodson Award for Achievement in Teaching, established in memory of the Dodson family, and the Robert J. Greef Award, given in memory of a former professor at the University of Central Missouri to an English education major to recognize the commitment to teaching of English.
